Basics

What areas does Oodle cover?

Oodle has five websites: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and India. Just enter your city and state or zip/postal code and you'll find local listings. If you are interested in the specific cities we cover, you can see metropolitan area lists for each country.

What is Oodle and why should I use it?

Oodle simplifies the classifieds shopping experience. With Oodle, you can not only see over thirty million listings from over 80,000 sources, but you can be the first to see new listings, have access to powerful tools that help you spot great deals, and relax while Oodle does the work for you. If you are selling something, you can post once on Oodle and distribute your ad across hundreds of partner sites.

My ad is showing on Oodle and other Oodle Network sites. How did it get there?

Oodle gathers online classified ads from thousands of sites around the web. Our database is made up of listing information stemming from three sources: user posted ads, advertisers who send us a listing feed, and websites we crawl for classifieds content.

My ad is posted on another website and your search results display incorrect information. What should I do?

If your ad is showing up incorrectly on our search results pages, please do the following:

  1. Click the link from our site through to your ad. If the original has the wrong information, contact the website where you posted the ad and make the changes. If the listing has correct information, please:
  2. Copy the URL of the ad at its original website
  3. Contact Us and paste that URL into the contact form. Let us know what information is incorrect when you fill in the form and we will investigate the problem.

What browsers or operating systems do you support?

We support every operating system. For optimal viewing, we suggest Internet Explorer 7 or 8, Firefox 3 or higher, or the latest version of Safari.

Registration, Username and Password

How do I register with Oodle?

  1. Click on the "Register/Sign In" link in the upper right corner of any Oodle page.
  2. You may register using an email address or using your Facebook account.
  3. If you choose to set up your account with Facebook, click on the Facebook Connect button.
  4. Facebook will ask you for your Facebook login information and have you set your permissions.
  5. Once you have completed Facebook Connect, you will be asked for your email address. This will allow us to send replies to your ads directly to you. This email will not be visible on your ads or in your seller profile.
  6. If you choose not to use Facebook Connect, simply enter your first and last name followed by your email address in the Create Account box. If you have set up an alert or posted an ad on our site previously, use the same email address.
  7. You will need to choose a password and confirm it.
  8. Once you have accepted Oodle's terms of service, click Submit.
  9. To complete your registration (for both Oodle and Facebook Connect), you will need to verify your email address by following the activate link in the email we've automatically sent you.

How do I know what my username and password are?

If you have set up an email alert by simply giving us your email address, you probably do not have a user name or password yet. Please sign up for an account by clicking the "Register/Sign In" link in the top right of the homepage.

How do I change my email address or password?

  1. Visit our homepage and click "Register/Sign In."
  2. Sign into your account using your email address and the password you chose when you registered your account. Or sign in using Facebook Connect.
  3. Click on the "My Profile" tab.
  4. To edit your email, simply enter your changes into the email form.
  5. To change your password click on the link "Change Password" and enter your old password and the password you would like to have.
  6. Once you have finished editing your account details click on the "Save my Account Settings" button to save your changes.

I forgot my password. What do I do?

If you have forgotten your password, but still have an active email address, you can click "Register/Sign In" from the homepage and enter your email into the sign in box. Then click the link that says "Forgot your password?" to have your password reset and emailed to you.

How do I sign in to my account?

Just click on the "Register/Sign In" link found in the upper right corner of the homepage or any search results page.

My Facebook Account is connected to a different Oodle Account, how do I change it?

A Facebook Account may only be associated with one Oodle Account. If you have already associated your Facebook Account with an Oodle Account you will not be able to associate it with a new Oodle Account.

I forgot my Facebook Password. Can I still sign in?

If you've already registered and verified your account, you may sign in using your email address. Enter your email address in the sign in box, and click on the "Forgot Password" link. An email will be sent to you with your password information. If you have not already registered your account you will need to go to Facebook to reset your password information.

I am using Facebook Connect to create an account, why do I need to enter my email address?

We ask for a valid email address so that we can directly send your responses to your listings. You email address will not appear anywhere on your listings or your seller profile.

I am having trouble signing in using Facebook Connect. What do I do?

First check to see if your log in and password for Facebook are correct by logging in to your Facebook Account. If your log in information is correct and you continue to have issues using Facebook Connect, please contact Facebook Support.

I did not get my validation or activation email. What should I do?

Check your bulk or spam folder to make sure the email was not delivered there. If you don't find it, add support@oodle.com to your address book or "safe senders" list. Then sign in to Oodle. On all of the My Account pages you will find instructions for verifying your email address. Click on the "click here" link to have another verification email sent to your account.

Posting Ads

Is it really free to post an ad?

Yes, placing an ad on Oodle is free. Your ad will be live for 30 days with unlimited text and up to 4 pictures. Even better, when you post your ad on Oodle, show up it on hundreds of other sites, including GoogleBase, Lycos Classifieds, and Local.com Classifieds.

For professional sellers who would like to post more than one ad per category we offer Oodle Pro, a comprehensive package for advertising your listings on the Oodle Network, including Facebook and Twitter.

How do I post a classified ad on Oodle?

Placing an ad through Oodle is free and easy. First register or sign in, by clicking on the "Register/Sign In" link in the upper-right corner of the page. Once you have signed in, just click the "Post a FREE Ad" button in the upper-right corner of the page.

The Post an Ad process will take you step by step through placing an ad through Oodle. Make your title short and meaningful; choose the correct category and a specific sub-category if you can; the first image you add becomes the thumbnail. When you place your ad through Oodle, it will show up on hundreds of other sites automatically, such as GoogleBase, Lycos Classifieds, Local.com Classifieds, and many more!

Do I have to register to Post a FREE Ad?

Yes. To post a free ad on Oodle you must register with a valid email address. This will ensure that you receive all the responses to your ad.

Do I have to include a region when I post my ad?

Because classifieds are an inherently local experience, you must include a region when posting a listing to Oodle in order to receive the highest quality leads. However, when a user is searching, it is possible for that user to do a nation-wide search. In this circumstance, your item will be searchable nationally.

How do I include pictures in my ad?

If you're posting a new ad, you can include up to 4 pictures.

You can upload pictures of up to 6MB in GIF, JPG, BMP, or PNG format. We'll resize your picture for web viewing.

To add pictures, click the link "Upload Photos" under the description box when you are posting or editing your ad. Then click the "Browse" button to search for pictures on your computer. Find the picture file and click "OK". The picture will then be uploaded and attached to your ad.

If your picture does not show up, you probably used a non-supported format (such as a PowerPoint document or a Word document). Please save your images as a GIF, PNG, JPG, or BMP. It may take 20 - 60 minutes to process the image change for the search results page. As long as you can see the image on the manage your ad page, please be patient.

I can't see the image at all in the "Verification:" box. What is wrong?

Please check to make sure that your internet browser has scripting or javascript enabled. Check to make sure that your internet security firewall is allowing third party images to display. Check that your browser and security firewall are allowing third party cookies. This problem can sometimes be resolved by making our site "trusted" in your firewall.

How do I edit or deactivate my ad?

Sign into your account. You can manage your ads through the "My Listings" page in the My Account Pages. You'll see a list of all of your ads. You can edit or close any ad by clicking on the links that appear below the title of your ad.

Please note that you cannot edit the category or location of your ad. If you need to change the category or location, please close your ad and create a new one.

How will people contact me about my ad? Do I have to put contact information in my ad?

You provide us your email address when you registered for your account. We use that email address to create a "Reply to My Ad" form that potential buyers can use to contact you. That way, you do not have to put your email address or phone number on the web for anyone to see.

Where else will my ad show up?

Ads posted on Oodle will automatically show up on hundreds of other sites in the Oodle classifieds network, such as GoogleBase, Backpage, and Walmart.com Classifieds. You don't have to do anything - we'll do all the work for you.

When will my ad expire?

Your ad will be live on the site for 30 days and will then expire automatically, unless you close it beforehand.

How will my ad be removed from the other sites?

When you close your ad on Oodle, it will automatically deactivate from other sites as well. It may take a day or so for the changes to propagate to GoogleBase and some other network partners.

How can I get more responses to my ad?

To increase the chance of getting a good response, follow these simple tips:

  • Include one or more pictures in your ad.
  • Make the title and description as detailed as possible. For example, "2004 Blue Honda Civic good condition 74K miles" is better than "Used car for sale".
  • If you are flexible on price, state in your title or description that you will accept "best offer." "$15K or best offer" is standard, or "$15K OBO."
  • Make it easy for buyer to pick up the item; let them know where the item is located and when you will be available.

What does "Pending", "Processing", or "Waiting to be Indexed" mean?

Ads that are "Pending", are in our system, but not activated yet. Please make sure that you have verified your email address and that your registered account is fully activated. Ads that are "Processing" or "Waiting to be Indexed" are in our system but have not yet been added to our search index (so you won't be able to find your ad by searching on the site). Ads take approximately 30 minutes to be added to our search index.

If you have waited more than half an hour, but still see that your ad is "Processing", please try to search for your listing. For location, use the zip/postal code you entered and the category you chose when posting.

If you wait more than 3 hours and still cannot find your ad, please contact us with your Ad Id or other details of your ad (zip code/postal code, category, title).

What happens when my item has sold?

If your item has sold, please remove your ad from the site by closing it (see "How do I edit or close my ad"). This will help keep Oodle free of ads that are no longer available.

Can I re-post my ad after it expires?

If your ad has expired, you may reactivate it within 30 days of its expiration date. Ads can either be reactivated through the link in your seller email or through your ad management panel. Once reactivated, your ad will be live for an additional 30 days.

I can't find my ad. What should I do?

Classified ads take approximately 30 minutes to appear in the search results from the time of publishing. To see your ad, go to the category and location where you posted it and search for keywords that are in the ad (such as the ad title). You can check on the status of your ad by signing in and going to the "My Listings Page" in the My Account Pages.

My thumbnail picture isn't showing up. What should I do?

If your thumbnail picture isn't showing up, you may have uploaded the picture in a non-supported format (such as PowerPoint (.ppt), Microsoft Word (.doc), or .tiff). Please try again with a supported image format (.bmp, .png, .gif, .jpg).

Also, sometimes it takes us up to 30 minutes to add your thumbnail image to the search results page. So, please check back.

If your image is in a supported format and you have waited at least 30 minutes for it to appear as a thumbnail, please and include your ad ID (if you know it).

I can't type into the description box when I am trying to submit a post. What should I do?

Check to make sure that you are using an updated version of your Internet browser. If you are using Safari on an older version of Macintosh OS X, we suggest you try Firefox instead. If you are using a version of Internet Explorer that is older than version 7 we suggest upgrading to Internet Explorer version 7 or 8.

I click "Post an Ad" and nothing happens. What is wrong?

Check to make sure that your internet browser has scripting or javascript enabled. If you have scripting enabled and the screen still won't pop-up, your internet security firewall, or browser security add-ons may be preventing communication between our servers and your browser.

Replying to Ads

I click the "Reply to my ad" button, but nothing happens, what should I do?

The background should gray out and a screen pops-up with a contact form for you to fill in. If this is not happening, please check to make sure that your internet browser has scripting or javascript enabled. If you have scripting enabled and the screen still won't pop-up, your internet security firewall, or browser security add-ons may be preventing communication between our servers and your browser.

I sent a message to the seller and didn't receive a reply. Is there another way to contact the person who posted the ad?

We don't have any other way to contact the poster of the ad. It is possible the item is already sold.

Can you help me find a listing I saw earlier, but is now gone?

We have no way to search for a listing which has been removed. Either the poster removed the ad because the item has been sold, or the listing was removed for violation of rules.

I clicked the link in the title of the ad and it does not point to the details of the ad I saw. What is wrong?

We are a search engine, and sometimes it takes a few days for us to find out about listings that are now unavailable on the original website. Please use the "Report" link to let us know the listing is "Unavailable".

Seller Profiles

What is a display name?

The display name is the name that will show on all your posted ads - it is associated with your email address. If you have posted ads, but have never entered a display name, then we will use your login ID name as your seller name. When you change your display name on a newly posted ad, you will change your display name for all of the ads posted from that email address.

If you have a registered log in, remember that you may set up a display name that is different from your username. You can't use your display name to log in to your account.

How do I change my display name?

You can change your display name by signing in and then going to the My Account pages. These pages can be accessed from any Oodle search page by clicking on the link "My Classifieds" in the upper right corner of the page. Select the tab "My Profile" to create or edit your display name. Don't forget to save changes by clicking on the button "Save Profile Settings."

How do I add a picture to my seller profile?

To add a seller profile picture you must be signed in to your account. Go to the My Account Pages by clicking on the "My Classifieds" link in the upper right hand corner of the homepage. Then click on the "My Profile" tab. To add a seller profile picture you may either connect to Facebook and use your Facebook profile picture, or upload a new photo. Don't forget to save your changes by clicking on the "Save Profile Settings" button.

How do I add my business name and logo?

Adding business information to the seller profile is only available for Oodle Pro users. To add or edit your business name or logo, go to the "My Profile" tab in the My Account pages.

Email Alerts

What is an email alert?

An email alert is an automatic notification about a classifieds search that you have entered. We get 500,000 new listings a day, so if you don't find what you're looking for right away, email alerts can help you find it in the future. They're convenient and free.

How do I stop my alert emails or change how often they are sent?

There are two possible ways to stop or manage your alert emails.

  1. Open the alert email and click on the "Stop this alert" or "Unsubscribe from this alert" link included with every Oodle alert we send out.
  2. If you have registered an Oodle account, stopping or managing your alerts is simple. Just visit our homepage, click "Register/Sign In" and sign in to your account. Once signed in, click on the "My Alerts" tab. To the left of each alert you will see a drop down menu that allows you to select how often you would like to receive the email alert. You will also see several links in the Actions column. You can choose to Start, Pause or Delete each alert. Pause will save the alert and allow you to turn it on again sometime in the future. Delete will completely remove the alert from the record and cannot be undone.

I did not get my validation or activation email. What should I do?

On all of the My Account pages you will find instructions for verifying your email address. Click on the "click here" link to have another verification email sent to your account.

My alert email is not giving me the listings I am looking for. What should I do?

Alerts are based on your initial search of the site, and cannot be changed or edited. If your existing alert is not providing meaningful listings, deactivate the alert and create a new, more specific alert. If you want higher quality results, the more specific (zip code, more attributes selected, etc.) your search is, the better.

Community Action & Moderation

What should I do if I suspect a listing of being fraudulent?

If you are suspicious about a listing that you see on Oodle, the best course of action is to report it to us. To do so, click on the "Report Listing" link at the bottom of the listing details view.

When you click on the "Report Listing" button, you will be provided with a pop-out box that you can fill out and send to us.

What are the various options in the "Report Listing" field?

When you click on the "Report Listing" button, you will be presented with a few options to choose from to better categorize the type of listing.

Here is a basic explanation of each option:

  • Miscategorized: Any listing that appears in the wrong category or subcategory (e.g. a boat that appears in the motorcycles category). This option may also be used if the information presented in a listing on Oodle (address, price, contact information, etc.) is different from the information in the original listing source.
  • Fraud: Any listing that appears suspicious, or if you believe that the listing's intent is to scam users. You can see example scams here).
  • Illegal, Inappropriate, or Discriminatory Content: Any listing which contains content that violates our Terms of Use or is deemed to be prohibited content.
  • Spam: Any listing that has been posted multiple times in the same region or does not contain classifieds content (e.g. a link to a website without anything specific for sale). This option may also be used for any listing that has been posted across multiple categories.
  • Unavailable: Any listing that no longer exists.

I saw an ad that said it was a "Suspected Listing." What does that mean?

Our community thinks this listing may be fraudulent. There are several ways that we use to determine whether a listing may be suspect. We use community moderation through the Report Listing tool, and we also have some proprietary tools we use. If you see this symbol, you should use extra caution when dealing with the seller. You can learn more about staying safe on Oodle at our Safety Center.

My ad has a suspected lisitng mark. What should I do?

If you have an item you posted for sale and your listing has the suspect mark, please use the Contact Us page to tell us about the problem. We will need your listing ID and/or the title of your ad, as well as the email address that was used to post your ad. We will investigate your problem and get back to you.

How do I get my classifieds site covered on Oodle?

Adding listings to the Oodle Network search index is free and will provide additional traffic to your listings. The fastest way to be added to the Oodle Network search index is to provide Oodle with a feed. For more information, view the Oodle Network Feed Guidelines.

Oodle Pro

How do I claim my listings?

Claiming your listings on Oodle is and simple and convenient. To claim your listings on Oodle you'll need to know your Agent ID. First, sign in to Oodle and go to the "Post a Listing" page and click on the yellow button that says "Claim Listings". Next, select your broker from the drop down menu and enter your Agent ID. Click the "Check Listings" button to submit your information. Once your listings appear, verify that you are the rightful owner of these listings and click on the "Claim Listings" button. It may take up to half an hour to process your listings. You will receive an email once they are live.

Currently we are providing claim to the following brokers: Century 21, Coldwell Banker, Better Homes and Gardens, and ERA. If you are interested in setting up your office with "claim" but are not affiliated with these brokers click here.

How do I set up my office with claim?

To add the claim functionality for your office, you will need to send us a feed of your listings. To learn more about this process please provide us with some more information here.

My Agent Id did not return any listings. What should I do?

First, check with your broker to see if your listings are in their feed. If your listings are accurately presented in their feed, please contact us.

Can I edit a claimed listing?

To edit your listings you must edit the feed your broker sends us. The next time we receive your listings from your broker, we will automatically update your listing.

Can I "unclaim" a listing?

If you have inadvertently claimed a listing that is not your listing please contact us.

Can I claim a listing that is listed under another agent?

You may only claim a listing if it is listed under your Agent Id. We are currently developing a solution that will allow you to claim shared listings. Check back soon!
