Toffee was spotted running along Waller Mill Road as stray by several people for a few days, but she was so scared that nobody was able to catch her. She ended up entering a backyard and being contained in the yard for several days but still wasn't able to be caught! She's one smart cookie! Despite a humane trap being set in the yard with tasty cooked bacon and treats, Toffee still wasn't having it! Luckily, though, after a lot of time, her new human friend gained her trust enough to get a leash on her.At the shelter she does pretty well meeting new people. She can be nervous. Mostly with men. But with her trusted humans by her side, Toffee has grown by leaps and bounds. She is so much more than the terrified semi-feral animal she was when she first got here. What she needs now is a family who can be patient while she figures out how to live as a pet dog in this scary human world. If that family includes a human man, that man MUST be a subscriber to Teddy Roosevelt's 'speak softly' philosophy. Toffee is a sensitive, squishy, scared little baby. She does not need and cannot handle a man who cannot handle his emotions. No intimidation needed. No yelling required. Toffee will flourish if trained with positive reinforcement. Toffee will be eternally grateful to the big scary humans who show her the most kindness and understanding. We see that from her every day. She makes us better people as we bring out the best in her.
