Job Description:The Lighting Supervisor at Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) is responsible for executing all lighting and electrical requirements for Conservatory productions. The Lighting Supervisor coordinates and supervises all lighting work calls, hangs, focuses and strikes, including guiding students in this work; and collaborates closely with guest designers and artists to implement designs and special effects. This position primarily supports the Mainstage Theater, with additional support and oversight to the Zack Box and other Conservatory performance spaces, including off-campus venues. As part of the Performance Services department, the Lighting Supervisor reports to the Assistant Director of Production and works closely with the Technical Directors, Stage Managers, and the full department; collaborates closely with guest directors, designers, and artists, and with deans, division chairs, faculty and staff in Theater, Music and Dance. The Lighting Supervisor oversees a production electrician, hourly and student staff. This is a year-round, full time position that is paid a salary bi-weekly, and is exempt. Anticipated hiring range is $60,000-$65,000 per year, plus benefits. Significant nights and weekends are required, especially during the academic year. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Evaluate and execute all lighting and electrical requirements for BCB productions and events Ensure alignment of lighting needs with artistic and institutional ambitions and with budgets and schedules Collaborate closely with lighting designers, visiting artists, and division deans, chairs and faculty for all event needs Serve as master electrician for Mainstage performances, or designate and supervise other staff in this role, including performances off-campus Attend and participate in rehearsals, techs, performances, load-ins, strikes, and production meetings to represent lighting and the department Recruit, train, assign and supervise show lighting crews (including students) on responsibilities, channel check, safety measures, etc. including running light board and followspots Support lighting and electrical needs for theater space rentals and guest artist events In collaboration with department colleagues, set stage work schedule each season Design and maintain theatrical lighting and electrical equipment inventory and condition in the Mainstage Theater, Zack Box, and other conservatory performance spaces Coordinate repairs and purchases for lighting systems as needed Identify and design solutions for long-term equipment, systems and capital investment planning Ensure safety standards are upheld to the highest standards in all spaces, including training and support for students and staff working in the space Act as Manager on Duty in theater spaces, in rotation with production colleagues MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: At least 5 years professional experience working as a master electrician, lighting designer, or similar for theater, dance, and/or opera productions 2 or more years of supervisory experience Bachelor's degree in lighting design, or equivalent professional training and experience Experience in electronics, Vectorworks, Lightwright, Eos Technology, and stage rigging systems PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Rigging knowledge Experience working with theatrical projection systems Experience working in a higher education environment KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Familiarity with EPA, USITT and OSHA workplace standards Familiarity with Boston Fire Department codes Familiarity with an ETC ION console with fader wing The Boston Conservatory at Berklee features 15 automated line sets, 2 hand lines, and 1 crank line. Automated line sets are run from a JR Clancy Scene Control 500. Console training will be provided. SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Experience with basic lighting design strongly preferred Ability to write cues, record submasters Experience supervising students or volunteers strongly preferred Must be able to work independently and within tight schedules SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises Production Electrician, production technicians, and student workers Proactively manage hours and coverage for LX needs WORK ENVIRONMENT: Indoor environments, some with low light: costume shop, stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms, office spaces Seated and standing positions Ladders and catwalks SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC: Ability to regularly lift objects of up to 40 lbs, and climb ladders up to a height of 24 feet required Nights and weekend work essential Valid driver's license requiredThis document does not create an employment contract, implied or otherwise, other than an "at will" employment relationship.
