Position Type: Substitute/Nurse - Substitute Date Posted: 1/9/2024 Location: Norwell Community School Corporation JOB TITLE: Substitute School Nurse SUMMARY: Plans policies, standards, and objectives of school health program in cooperation with medical authorities and administrative school personnel. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following: 1. Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating: a. School health goals, objectives, and procedures. b. Programs to assess the health and developmental status of preschool and school populations. c. Programs to eliminate or minimize health problems that interfere with a student's learning. 2. Implements all screening programs mandated by Indiana law. 3. Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care. 4. Critiques and utilizes current research in school, child, and family health and participates in health and educational research as appropriate. 5. Identifies and reports any current or potential hazards that may affect the environmental health and/or safety of students and/or staff; documents hazardous materials utilized within the building to facilitate appropriate emergency care. 6. Administers medications and treatments to students based on physicians' orders, parents' authorization, School Board policy, and the Nurse Practice Act. 7. Administers medications/vaccines to staff based on physicians' orders and the signed release of staff receiving such medication/ vaccine as permitted by the Wells County Health Department. 8. Compiles, maintains, and annually reviews student health records, which include immunization and emergency information. 9. Identifies health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, and review of health records and screening programs. 10. Participates as requested in developing a student's Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). 11. Develops, as necessary, an Individualized Health Plan (IHP), with goals, objectives, and interventions based on the student's needs. 12. Provides educational opportunities that assist students in developing self-care skills for specific health problems. 13. Provides health counseling to assist students in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors. 14. Assists students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources. 15. Collaborates with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff on current and potential health needs to facilitate school and community planning and intervention. 16. Assists the guidance department in the identification, investigation, and resolution of potential or current problems relating to family dynamics that may impact students' health and learning. 17. Communicates current health problems, needs, and/or concerns of students to their parents and school staff as appropriate and within legal guidelines for release of student information. 18. Provides consultation and assistance to teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating health education units. 19. Provides information and training for school staff on health related issues. 20. Assists in the development and implementation of safety procedures for students and staff. 21. Assists as appropriate in training staff members and/or volunteers in the proper administration of medical treatments and procedures; documents training. 22. Assumes responsibility for personal professional development. 23. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Registered Nurse license LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to analyze and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to present information to and communicate in a positive manner with students, administrators, faculty, parents, and members of the community. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variables when only limited standardization exists. Ability to use equipment and work aids associated with this type of work. OTHER SKILLS: Ability to utilize technology appropriate to the functions of this job.
