Summary This student summer internship position sponsored by a collaboration among En Nuestra Lengua, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum and Jewish Family Services is designed to achieve action steps toward: Enriching the educational experience for all students through adapting existing MBGNA discovery guides to Spanish for and by Spanish-speaking communities. Develop Spanish-language communications (brochures, e-letter, web-based information) that provides a welcoming and culturally diverse environment, through Spanish-language centered narratives and storytelling that uplifts family and culturally based values, memories and practices. Make visible the scholarly output through dissemination in academic journals and scholarly forums with special attention to sharing findings through community-based presentations in Spanish and English. The intern will develop inclusive Spanish-language structures and culturally relevant materials that support a welcoming environment for Latino/a community members, in particular those immigrant families that are part of En Nuestra Lengua and Jewish Family Services. The student intern will work closely with grant partners to co-create inclusive educational materials, including STEAM related K-12 activities, family programming and pop-up activities for youth and families. The internship program runs May 6 through late August and includes evening and weekend hours. En Nuestra Lengua - En Nuestra Lengua (ENL) (Spanish for "In Our Language"), is a non-profit Saturday academic program founded in 2010 for Spanish-speaking students, ages 4 - 14. ENL is a program developed by Latinos. Its mission is to develop young speakers' native Spanish knowledge and to promote cultural pride. Jewish Family Services - The Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program is designed to encourage the development of agricultural and food systems related services that will improve the livelihoods physically, economically, and psychosocially of refugee families resettled in the United States. The team connects individuals to community resources related to gardening and farming. It provides gardening and farming classes through the support of MBGNA, nutrition education classes provided through MSU, and psychosocial support groups and financial literacy classes through JFS. It allows for participants to connect with other individuals and families in order to increase their overall sense of support. Responsibilities* Work with the grant team and stakeholders where appropriate to develop materials that will be professionally translated into Spanish. Develop & implement nature based and sustainability activities for Hispanic youth. Track program participation, create & administer surveys and learn program administration skills. Collaborate to create content in order to foster connections between people, plants and the planet. Develop training materials and content that is culturally competent Required Qualifications* Graduated high school and currently enrolled in a college/university by the internship start date of May 6, 2024, or a December 2023 or spring 2024 college or university graduate. Bilingual Spanish-English with native-like Spanish; high reading and writing proficiency in Spanish . Desired Qualifications* Enjoy working with children and working outdoors. Strong interest in developing Latino community engagement connecting people to plants & places. Interest in learning how to develop graphics, lesson plans and other interactive learning tools will find this internship exciting. Interest in or experience in community development and environmental justice and equity. Additional Information Interns work up to 35-40 hours/week including some weekend and evening programs, May-August. Primarily in-person with options for some hybrid work. One positions available Compensation: $20.00 per hour Note: Since internship positions that involve work with children require a background check, students offered a position will be required to go through a background check process.
