I WILL ACCEPT THE FIRST FAIR OFFER FOR THESE TWO RARE ca. 1900 Nantucket watercolors. The Artists Association of Nantucket writes of "Nantucket artist J. D. Hunting (American worked circa 1900). Hunting is listed by Wyer in 1906 as working on Nantucket. He is also mentioned in the book Quaint Nantucket.” The watercolor signed by Hunting, a member of the Nantucket Art Colony, is of a beach scene with sandy cliffs and boulders. I'm not sure if the watercolor depicts Nantucket or the Vineyard -- but it's gorgeous! The other by F.C. Clark is not signed but is attributed and dated on the back with a label (the watercolor came out of the estate of a lifelong New England antique dealer who had numerous works by Clark. The watercolor by Clark depicts the Nantucket home of Dr. Benjamin Sharp, Jr., at 2 Gorham Court. A watercolor by Clark showing a somewhat different view of Sharp home was auctioned by Rafael Osona Auctions in their July 15, 2017, sale.
