Name: Gatsby Best Guess for Breed: Lab and Catahoula Mix Best Guess for Age: 4 years as of January 2023 SEX: Male Approximate Weigh t: 46 lbs Gets Along With : Other dogs! We haven’t seen Gatsby with kids, but he can be tested. We tested Gatsby with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that he could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack! Currently Living at: DC Area Foster Home Special adoption considerations: Gatsby tested positive for heartworm disease and was treated on 2/21/23. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the screening process. Retesting is recommended 9 - 12 months after treatment to confirm they are heartworm negative. Gatsby is Looking For: This sweetie arrived in the shelter underweight and heartworm positive, so he's clearly had a rough go of it. But you know what? He's living in the moment - he has firmly closed the book on that part of his life and is looking forward to better days. He's out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved! He's looking forward to n having his own humans and trotting alongside them on all the adventures they can dream up. And then curling up with them at the end of a fun day together. What do you say? Does Gatsby get the fresh start he is looking for - and you the loyal companion you've been seeking? What My Foster Says About Me: Gatsby is a socialite who is excited to greet people and dogs. He hasn't had any accidents in the house with us, and has no issue being crated. When he is ready for sleep at night he will put himself to bed in his crate. He is highly motivated by treats and appreciates a good pet. If you can provide one of those two, he will not leave your side. He shows no interest in jumping up on furniture, but loves taking naps on his dog beds. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
