POSITION OVERVIEW The Employment and Litigation Paralegal will provide a full range of support to the Legal Department and partner with in-house and outside attorneys, Human Resources (HR), and Compliance. This role is responsible for assisting with a diverse array of legal, employment, and compliance matters arising from the company's workforce of 1,600+, with an objective of balancing the need to support the achievement of business goals while minimizing potential legal liability in employment decisions, litigation, and compliance matters. In addition, this individual will work on a broad range of complex legal issues related to HR, employment, general litigation, regulatory, risk management, information management, compliance, and internal investigation matters. This position also provides advice and strategy with respect to various company policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices. The Employment and Litigation Paralegal partners closely with the HR team, Assistant General Counsel, and other in-house counsel as necessary. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Supports/monitors HR matters by investigating, managing, and assisting in the resolution of labor and employment related issues with all levels of professionals, including outside counsel. Drafts and/or reviews new hire materials, company policies and handbooks, and severance agreements and releases. Prepares and/or revises employee training materials. Conducts online legal research, as needed. Monitors and advises legal team and HR regarding applicable developments in federal, state, and local laws. Prepares responses and document production in response to subpoenas. Assists with investigations in response to employee complaints and/or employee misconduct. Helps with document reviews and records management for employment and non-employment litigation matters. Prepares and manages information holds. Prepares and/or reviews general contractual agreements, including non-disclosure agreements. Assists with responses to charges of employment discrimination filed with the EEOC or other government agencies, and with fact-finding investigations, conferences, and mediations. Provides legal support to Benefits and Compensation personnel, including review of agreements with health and welfare vendors and consultants. Assists with immigration and ERISA related matters. Assists with the review/update of employee policies, procedures, and training materials. Answers, screens, and transfers inbound telephone calls to appropriate parties or take messages in a professional manner. Proactively maintain business schedules by planning and scheduling meetings both domestically and internationally, including conferences, teleconferences, and travel. Produces information by transcribing, proofreading, formatting, inputting, editing, retrieving, copying, and transmitting text, data, and graphics. Maintains a flexible and adaptive schedule (e.g., start early or stay late if required to complete work). Ensures written materials prepared and reviewed are complete, concise, and error-free. Ensures that legal, regulatory, intellectual property, and associated compliance files and records are maintained in accordance with department requirements and company policies and procedures. Prepares audit response letters. Maintains and tracks trademark ownership, deadlines, and facilitates renewal process. Assists with miscellaneous administrative tasks, the drafting of presentation materials, and special projects, as needed. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Knowledge: Understanding of the time commitment necessary to support employment, litigation, internal investigation, and compliance matters in a fast-paced high-volume project environment. Understanding of litigation and case management, including strong organizational skills. Knowledge of office management administration, principles, methods, and procedures. Aware of sorting/filing techniques, information management standards, intellectual property principles, and records retention practices necessary to maintain accurate, confidential, and reliable records. General knowledge of employment law. General knowledge of compliance functions, intellectual property concepts, and commodity trading businesses. Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees. Strong and effective organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks with a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Effective time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines. Proficiency in MS Office Software and the ability to learn and acquire expertise in new software and applications. Ability to work under pressure and to maintain efficiency and composure. Commitment to participatory management and a strong service orientation. Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with a variety of other support and departments. Ability to handle issues with a high degree of confidentiality and accuracy. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education, Training and Certifications : High School Diploma or equivalent required; Paralegal certification required; Bachelor's Degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted. Experience :Minimum of seven (7) years of applicable experience in legal field or a related area is preferred; Energy industry experience preferred. Employment law and litigation experience required. Must have extensive experience and acumen to plan and accomplish DIRECT REPORTS No direct reports FREEDOM TO ACT Ability to multi-task and function in a highly dynamic atmosphere; must exercise discretion independently and consult with attorneys as necessary. WORK CONDITIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Job is performed in a typical office environment, but is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is also dependent on input from others. Subject drug and alcohol testing, per applicable federal regulations and company policies.
