Adopt Grace D12274 a Brown/Chocolate Retriever (Unknown Type) / Australian

Location:
Minnetonka, MN
Description:

Hi, my name is Grace. I came from a shelter in Alabama. Grace is a 1 year old retriever/kelpie mix, she weighs 43 lbs. Feedback from the foster: Grace is an amaaazing pup! She came to SHH with two sore eyes and after some amazing medical care and comfort in a foster home, we can tell how much better she's feeling even in this short time. Grace looooves people and has made her the very best snuggle buddy. Her love for people gets her a little excited so when she first came to SHH she was a little jumpy, but now (even without being asked) when she sees someone she knows she needs to sit to get attention. This has shown us how wicked smart she is-she really aims to please! :) She is fully potty trained and will even whine when she needs to be let out. She also does great in the car. She also loves toys of all kinds, and especially ones that squeak (can you blame her?). She doesn't bark or shed, hardly at all. She goes to doggy daycare once a week and everyone there loves her and she loves them too; humans and dogs alike. When she first arrived she didn't like to go in the kennel but we've learned a few tips and tricks to make the crate a safe and cozy space for her. We will occasionally give her a little anxiety medication when we're gone for long periods of time, but recently have left the home for an hour or 2 and have come back to her comfortably sleeping in her crate without medication. We think she just needed to learn that we'll always come back for her-short times in the crate have really helped with her security in that. Grace will sometimes wear a halo harness when out for walks in the community and she's been navigating really well with it. She is a little more nervous with stairs (understandably) but has gotten even better as the days have gone on and she's been more confident with her surroundings. Limited stairs in a home could help, but regardless, we think she'll learn to navigate things over time. From the vet team: Hello! I arrived at SHH as part of the Fighter Fund program due to issues with my eyes. An ophthalmologist diagnosed me with Congenital Glaucoma and it was decided the best course of action is for a double eye enucleation surgery (removal of the eye) since the glaucoma is progressive. I have had one of my eyes removed and have an upcoming surgery to remove the other one. This procedure will be covered by SHH as long as it takes place at the SHH Vet Center in Minnetonka . My future adopter should be aware that I will not be able to see and manage my medical care with a primary veterinarian.
