Description:

A SWEET OLDER FELLOW: Approx. 12 years old / Approx. 19 lbs. Hi, I’m Nitro! I was adopted 3 years ago but came back to Mostly Mutts due to being protective of my mom and biting the grandson. This can be trainable, and the folks at Mostly Mutts will be glad to help you. I have not done this behavior since being back, and in fact I’ve been quite happy-natured. I’m a sweet and funny little guy who is ready to be your new best friend! • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: When I was previously with Mostly Mutts I liked some other dogs, but due to guarding my food/water bowls and my person I should be your only dog. / No cats due to guarding. / I should not live with kids due to the bite in my former home and due to guarding. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m very devoted, loving, and sweet to my favorite people! I’m the kind of dog that will bond deeply with one or two people who are my primary pack/caregivers. Though at the Mostly Mutts shelter, I have been happy to see lots of the volunteers that come to take care of me. Once I know and trust you, bring on the pets and lap time, please. My former owner said that I was sweet and loving but also possessive/protective of my people. Mostly Mutts will be happy to help you with this trait, which can be trainable. I have been working on this on my daytrips to a nice volunteer’s house and responded well to a “nuh uh” noise when I started to growl at another family member. They are also showing me that I need to be invited to join them on the couch and I am responding well to that. Being a food-motivated guy is great for training, but sometimes I can be a bit of a counter surfer and beggar, so please tell me ‘no’ and I respond well. I really like the volunteers who have spent time with me and am glad to show my happy personality. / My energy level is around a 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm a proud graduate of the Mostly Mutts University training program, so, I've mastered the 'sit', 'stay', 'down', 'come', 'drop it', 'leave it' and 'place' commands. I also use proper door etiquette and have good leash manners as well as accept nice strangers without jumping. My trainer says that I’m a smart guy! / I’ve had some issues with the crate both in my former home and at MM, and I did bite when I was forced to go into it. I do well in my little room at the shelter so maybe we can try a little washroom or other small area if you need to leave me alone. / I’ve had very good potty manners at MM and in my former home on a good take-out schedule, so yay me! When I go on daytrips to a nice volunteer’s home, I alert that I need to go outside by pacing and approaching the door. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I love spending time with my people, short walks, hard bones, treats, car rides, and soft toys, I also like having my chest and belly rubbed and I enjoy looking out windows and peanut butter – YUM! Yard and stream exploration, rolling around in the grass and stopping to smell the flowers are also on my list of favorites! / I don’t like meeting people too quickly or people getting into my space, just give me a little time to get to know you. I’m not a fan of fast or loud moving cars that pass me on walks. I also don’t like being confronted or having my hind quarters rubbed, but I do well for my baths and wipes once I trust you. I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. I have a pretty bad collapsing trachea so I’ve started medication for that and should take shorter walks, led with a harness not a collar. I should also not be walked much when it’s hot outside - just to go to the potty or a cool stream. I’ve been diagnosed with Cushing’s, so I’ve started medication for that and I’m on a liver supplement. I’ll need occasional testing to see how these things are doing. Some great news is that when I was with Mostly Mutts before I was diagnosed with an enlarged heart/hypertension/tachypnea but thankfully those things have stabilized a lot and I no longer need any heart medication!! If you’re looking for a devoted dog and have a nice quiet home environment as well as no kids or other pets, we could be a good match! My adoption fee is $100.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.
