Job Description:The Axalta North American Packaging Engineer is responsible for managing Axalta's finished product packaging offering in NA including: Packaging materials, environmental health and safety (EH&S requirements), regulatory requirements, cost optimization, packaging simplification, best practices, and associated process related improvements that support business and customer needs.The Packaging Engineer will report to Harold Blount, Global Packaging Process Engineer office located in Front Royal, VA.Packaging will include anything a customer might see when receiving our paints and coatings: * Adhesives * Bags * Corrugated * Cans and bottles, both tinplate and plastic * Drums * Films, stretch wrap * Intermediate bulk containers * Labels * Lids and closures * Pails * Pallets * SS Totes * TapeYou will: * Office in Front Royal, VA. * Learn and obey Axalta Front Royal plant safety rules. Actively participating in making Axalta safer. * Become the primary packaging material and associated equipment resource/Subject Matter Expert for all NA business and site teams. Proactively engaging leaders and teams and consulted/engaged in all packaging related issues, needs and opportunity. * Become liaison between operations and regulatory to maintain packaging compliance with various regulations. * Reconcile diverse cross-functional view in defining priorities and plans, gaining leadership alignment, and implementing NA package offering improvements. * Participate in external/industry packaging networks and organizations, engage supplier and customer to gain market and competitive insights as a key element in framing delivered packaging offerings materials, quality, and process improvement direction/priorities. * Be responsible for creating packaging specs for NA in the Global Packaging Component Spec system, including regulatory required updates of specs with the necessary UN Certifications. * Develop relationships with Axalta's suppliers and procurement, to obtain required spec information. * Obtain supplier drawings and specifications for Axalta specs. Some of this may be in other than English. * Obtain supplier UN Certifications for the Axalta specs. * Become familiar with the other sources of packaging information within Axalta. * Provide packaging information from the Global Packaging Component system and other resources to Axalta suppliers, internal Axalta customers, and external Axalta customers as requested. * Become familiar with the packaging materials and packaging equipment within both Front Royal (by seeing) and other Axalta plants around North America (from specs and descriptions). * Become familiar with future Axalta capital expansions and participate in identifying new necessary packaging equipment and plant layouts. Become familiar with other global solutions to similar issues and learn from their experiences. * Trouble shoot packaging quality issues in Front Royal, VA, working with manufacturing, quality, procurement, and Global Packaging Engineer. * Have frequent opportunities for direct interaction with our internal manufacturing and marketing groups, as well as our external automotive customers. * Support Procurement programs for cost savings and back up sources of supply. * Lead packaging plant trials in Front Royal, VA. * Collect and FedEx ship samples as requested.QUALIFICATIONS: * A BS or MS degree in Packaging, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering or similar discipline. * SAP knowledge is a plus. * General knowledge of key dangerous goods regulations such as DOT, IMDG, and IATA. Willingness to certify in these regulatory . * Some understanding of basic organic and inorganic chemistry. * The demonstrated ability to learn on the job. Be curious about all aspects of Axalta packaging and products. * Be an effective problem solver with strong analytical skills. * Results oriented and a self-starter. * Demonstrated ability to work directly with teams in a collaborative environment. * Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills * Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MiniTab, AutoCAD and Cape Systems. Also, a familiarity with the packaging specific software that Axalta or our suppliers might have, such as AutoCAD, CAPE, TOPS, ArtiosCAD and/or Adobe art products. * Ability to work in a team environment.Our Company:Axalta has remained at the forefront of the coatings industry by continually investing in innovative solutions.
