WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE OPEN/CLOSE DATES: 04/10/2023 - 05/07/2023 Salary Range $20.04 - $31.38 Hour Hourly/Full Time/7-Day Shift/Bi-Weekly/Non-Exempt NATURE OF WORK The purpose of this position is to allow employees the required work experience and training required by the State of Alabama to qualify for Wastewater Certification. This is a training position , not to be held by any one employee for more than 24 months. Continued regular full time employment is contingent on the employee obtaining an Alabama Grade IV Wastewater Certification within 24 months. Employees in this position must be proficient in reading comprehension and basic mathematics. Upon obtaining an Alabama Grade IV Wastewater Certification, employees will be promoted to Operator I at a pay range of $21.91 to $34.28 per hour. If incumbents do not obtain an Alabama Grade IV Wastewater Operator Certification within 24 months, they will face termination. This is on-the-job (OJT) training to teach employees to perform semi skilled/skilled work involved in the operation of a Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant to include the operation of unmanned facilities through the use of HMI/SCADA computers. Trainee will be provided the necessary OJT and classroom instruction to prepare them to obtain a Grade IV Wastewater Operator Certification. Employees work under the general direction of a Plant Supervisor and the specific supervision of a Certified Plant Operator II. Work includes responsibility for assisting with the proper operation of equipment in wastewater treatment plants, surface water processing and systems. Employees check with the Certified Plant Operator II on unusual problems and keeps necessary operating records and readings. Work is checked through a review of these records, inspections, and observations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: Checks electric pump and motor bearings, oil levels, rings and couplings. Makes periodic rounds of plant checking charts, gauges, meters, electric motors, pumps, filters and other equipment. Maintains log of plant operations as directed. Performs routine and non-routine tasks i.e. backwashes filters, cleans clarifier weirs. Performs general cleaning and painting and repairs the physical properties of the plant. Assists in conducting chemical analyses, using special test equipment and material to determine appropriate treatment. Maintains grounds and facilities. Climbs on a platform to check equipment and chemicals. Assist in operating the computers to check the system. Assist in cleaning tanks and basins when need. Checks and take meter readings throughout the plant and makes mathematical computations. Lubricates mechanical equipment and pack pumps. Picks up samples throughout the plant with automatic sampler or by hand. Operates the belt press/rotary drum thickener and works with Agrarian Center Foremen as necessary to control belt press sludge or liquid transported to land application, as supervised. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES to include the following: Performs other duties as may be required. REQUIREMENTS OF WORK Must pass the State Certification examination required to obtain a Grade IV Waste Water Certification from the State of Alabama within two years of hire date. Knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps and other mechanical equipment. Knowledge of the operation of electric motors, valves, and equipment. Knowledge of water or wastewater treatment processes. Knowledge in operating computers. Knowledge of the proper methods of lubricating mechanical equipment. Ability to learn to test and analyze effluent to evaluate plant performances. Ability to perform preventive maintenance of plants, systems, and equipment. Ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records and to make mathematical computations. Ability to paint, clean, repair, calibrate, adjust, and perform minor repair, to electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic, control devices are desirable. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to traverse and climb upon equipment for inspections and to inspect equipment from all angles. Ability to make accurate analysis of test. Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to divergent from obvious standards) of data to include forms, reports, engineering drawings, electrical diagrams, procedural manuals, and operational manuals. Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner. Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, and managers. Ability to communicate and work with public. Requires the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency. Ability work shift rotation, holidays and overtime, as required. REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma or equivalent. Valid Alabama driver's license and be insurable by the Board's insurance carrier. DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE State Certification as a Water or Wastewater Plant Operator issued from the State of Alabama or any state operator certification recognized/transferable by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. 3 years of experience in Wastewater Treatment Plant operation. Training courses in operations and Safety. PHYSICAL ABILITIES Ability to see, hear and speak in normal ranges and tones. Ability to pick up heavy objects and pick up bags and/or containers up to 100 pounds for mixing chemicals. Ability to climb ladders and stairs to three stories, climb on platforms to check equipment and chemicals, pull hoses, and descend into tanks. Ability to traverse and climb upon equipment for inspections and to inspect equipment from all angles. WORK ENVIRONMENT A majority of this work will be performed at a Waste Water treatment plant and outside at various plant facilities in ambient weather conditions. Job Posted by ApplicantPro
