Chest of drawers purchased in Buffalo, NY. The dresser comes from a collection of antique furniture and is perfect for anyone seeking an a genuine antique addition to their home. It is dual tone Walnut veneer on the drawers and doors and more closely resembles the rectilinear federal/neoclassical style from the late 18th century. The unseen sides of the drawers are Oak. These features line up with a date stamp on the back (identical to the date stamp on a French Provincial piece however this date reads "1780 1/4").This highboy is almost identical to another piece: French Provincial Antique Chest of Six Drawers Dresser by Sligh Furniture - 1916, which, when refinished, was sold for $2850. At this link: https://dwelldekor.com/products/french-provincial-antique-chest-of-six-drawers-dresser-by-sligh-furniture-1916There is a "Sligh Grand Rapids" label inside one of the top drawers, however it doesn't match any of the labels at this link: http://www.furniturecityhistory.org/company/3824/sligh-furniture-co detailing Sligh Furniture history. Sligh didn't open until 1880 and there is no record of them restoring furniture. I imagine that Sligh acquired the dresser, fixed it up a bit, and copied it. There is much supporting evidence that the dresser was made in 1780: dovetailing, up-and-down mill saw marks, rose head nails, and very in line with federal style. But there are more modern screws securing the drawer knobs as well as corrugated fasteners, showing it was refurbished at some point. Also the clear classic lines and rich wood tones are further in line with Federal style furniture of the late 1700's.
