The Sheridan Libraries' Special Collections department, in collaboration with the Billie Holiday Project for Liberation Arts, seeks a part-time Archival Assistant. The Archives Assistant will become a vital member of a team of historians, artists, curators, archivists, and others working on the grant-funded project Inheritance Baltimore: Humanities and Arts Education for Black Liberation. A central goal of the grant is to document and preserve the histories of local African American communities, often marginalized within or omitted from institutional archives. Reporting to the Africana Archivist, the Archival Assistant will assist with key activities related to Black cultural heritage preservation in and about Baltimore. This is a part-time one-year position beginning in September 2023, without benefits. Working hours will be on site between 8:30 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday, with weekend and evening duties several days per month.Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesAssist with the organization and description of JHU-held archival collections related to Black history.Assist with outreach and preservation activities related to community archives.Assist with on-site and off-site implementation of the Billie Holiday Center Digital Humanities Lab.Special Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesExperience in an archive or special collections library, or related training, or professional experience in public history or community outreach. Experience with digitization tools and platforms for scanning and a/v recording.Cultural competency and experience with Africana / African American community engagement.Flexibility and willingness to adjust to job duties as changes in technology and user needs dictate.Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different kinds of people, including faculty, librarians, and community stakeholders.Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED required.Two years related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience.Candidates who are currently enrolled in a library science program and have an interest in archives or special collections are encouraged to apply. Preferred QualificationsBA in a humanities or social sciences discipline such as history, literature, sociology, anthropology, ethnic studies, Black studies, library and information science, or a BA in another discipline.Experience with community-based and collaborative approaches to archiving. Experience creating digital exhibitions.Academic training or background in African American history and culture.
