I bought the truck with most of the major modifications already done. The previous owner took a Discovery 2 with some damage to the top of the rear (no other information was given), and cut off the top rear off behind the front doors to create a pickup truck-like body. This explains the Salvage and Rebuilt title status (which reappear when titled in new states).÷ He fabricated the roll cage, ram bar, side and rear bumpers/sliders, and removable rear ladder out of heavy gauge steel tubing. Front and rear steel skid plates protect the ends. A steel half-wall was welded in behind the front seats, and a roll up window installed from the roof to the half-wall so it could be run in the rain as a pickup truck or opened up in the sun. The steel was painted black and coated with truck bed liner. Front and rear heavy-duty hitch receivers added.÷ The entire rear area is coated with truck bed liner with some drainage holes so it can be hosed out.÷ The roll cage in the rear is set up as an air tank. Plug in your compressor and use the volume of the inside of the tubes to hold extra pressure for airing up and down your tires. The inlet and outlet are shown in the photos.÷ The truck was given larger tires (Cooper Discoverer S/T LT255/85/R16 M+S). To my knowledge, nothing else was modified underneath.÷ A custom welded aluminum roof rack with an enclosed roof-top tent was built. The rack folds out and deploys the armature that supports the tent, which goes over the top and attaches quickly with snap fasteners. The tent area is huge â sleeps 4, plus 2 more shorter folks can sleep in the bed below with the bench seat folded forward. Two rolls of 2â high density foam pads make it comfortable. A rear stabilizer with telescoping legs and ladder anchors the rear. The area under the rear of the tent, behind the truck, can be enclosed with a waterproof screen (same rubberized canvas as the tent) that goes all the way around to create an outdoor room (sorry no photos of that in action). This room can be a shower! There is a Shurflow pump powered by the battery that works with an attached clear hose and shower nozzle. Amazing relief at the campsite.÷ The engine received a Sceptre high-flow air filter and the rear resonator was removed for a bit better engine breathing. I purchased the truck and had the engine rear main seal redone and an oxygen sensor replaced. I then finished the customization to be a more functional all-weather truck.÷ The Top: First, I had additional steel bars added to the rear to raise the headroom to be comparable to the original roofline (instead of straight back from the cab). A custom canvas top was hand made out of the best material that can be purchased. It is fully removable. Rubber bumper/spacers were placed between the canvas, the roll bars and the roof rack above so the canvas doesnât get abraded.÷ The windows zip in and out and have a storage bag. Additional custom fabric "blackout windows" can be attached via velcro to the inside. The top is not 100% waterproof but pretty close. In driving rainstorms a drop or two can find its way past the seams where the canvas wraps around the upper roll bars at the front. This could be easily fixed but it hasnât because it seems too minor.÷ The Engine: I sent the engine computer to England to master tuner Mark Adams at Tornado Systems. He custom remapped the ECU to deliver a smooth 10-12% horsepower/torque increase over the entire RPM band. The factory stock rating was: 217 hp @ 4,750 rpm and 300 lb-ft @ 2,600 rpm. A small but noticeable power increase.÷ The Suspension: I upgraded to Heavy Duty Springs and Shocks.÷ The Spare: A used Yakima rack was mounted over the cab and the full-sized spare tire bolted to the center...
