16542BRMedical Laboratory ManagerWatkins Health Services Position Overview Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.The Watkins Health Services (WHS) Laboratory Manager has overall responsibility for supervision of the laboratory, including operations and personnel. The Manager also works as one of the medical technologists in the lab. Duties are performed in accordance with (1) WHS administrative policies and procedures; (2) established professional standards of medical technology practice and ethics; and (3) other responsibilities assigned by the position's supervisor & the Chief of the Medical Staff. Within this framework, the duties are carried out with latitude for independent professional judgment and action.The incumbent in this position will see, hear and possibly have access to confidential information that must be handled in accordance with all relevant state and federal laws and University policies and procedures regarding its use and disclosure. This position is also authorized to review, create and process patient information and/or data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.WHS utilizes computer technology in all aspects of its operations, including an electronic health record system. The incumbent must become familiar with and be able to use the appropriate computer hardware and software programs associated with this position. The incumbent must be familiar with and adhere to the Watkins Health Services Customer Experience Plan to ensure appropriate interaction and positive outcomes with both internal and external customers.Watkins Health Services is a unit in Student Affairs.Job Description 35 % Performs all functions of a medical technologist, including: being able to operate all equipment and perform all tests in the lab; performing venipunctures on patients; participating in quality improvement activities such as proficiency testing challenges; and keeping current in all lab topics. 25 % Supervises personnel in the laboratory which includes: Participating in interviews and hiring of new staff. Determines expectations of job duties and submits recommendations for updating position descriptions within the laboratory. Trains new staff on lab processes; department policies and procedures; and Watkins Health Services and/or administrative policies. Organizes and makes work schedules and adjusts workload as necessary. Approves staff use of benefit time based on workload and staffing. Evaluates staff performance and recommends merit increases. Recommends and completes disciplinary for lab staff, as necessary. Monitors quality of lab performance for test result accuracy and completeness; patient protection, employee safety, and confidentiality of reporting. Updates lab manuals, as necessary. Performs quality improvement reviews and supervises quality improvement studies, as indicated. Keeps current on regulatory requirements and monitors laboratory compliance. Stays current in the laboratory field through continuing education. 30% Supervises operational processes in lab. Serves as the system administrator for the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Approves supply orders/bills submitted by lab office staff. Provides input on lab contracts, estimating usage needed for reference lab contracts, service contracts, etc. Approves special laboratory projects, proposes and implements new procedures, and requests new equipment or repairs on current lab equipment. 5% Performs miscellaneous tasks as required by supervisor. 5 % As needed, serves on various WHS and University committees. Required Qualifications1. Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or related field from an accredited university; or bachelor's in a related field and completion of an approved Medical Technologist program.2. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent registry.3. Three years related professional experience.4. Minimum of 6 months experience supervising subordinates.5. CPR certification current or within 6 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications1. Previous experience in a college health environment.2. Experience working with people of varying backgrounds and cultures.3. Familiarity with chemistry; hematology analyzers; other laboratory equipment and instruments; and a broad array of test methodologies, including microbiology practice.
