The City of Homer is accepting applications for a Full-Time Mechanic I or II. Requires five years experience in light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems. Welding experience and maintenance knowledge of fire, medical and rescue vehicles desired. High School Diploma or GED and Commercial Drivers License with Tanker Endorsement preferred. Successful applicant will be required to have a CDL physical and drug test prior to employment and agrees to obtain a Commercial Drivers License with Tanker Endorsement within first 6-months of employment . The City of Homer is an EEO/AAE. MECHANIC I GENERAL FUNCTIONS Maintenance and repair of City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock and small equipment. JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES 1. Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems. 2. Performs routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other maintenance on equipment, assists in maintenance record keeping. 3. Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property. 4. Builds special equipment as directed by the Head Mechanic. 5. Purchases parts for required repairs. 6. Occasionally may operate heavy equipment and trucks, etc. as required to assist with street, sewer and water system maintenance. 7. Performs other duties as directed. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Five years extensive experience in heavy mechanical work, repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems. Welding experience desired. Maintenance knowledge of fire, medical, and rescue vehicles desired. Ability to keep accurate records required. High school diploma or GED and Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement required. DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES Requires the ability to assist with preventive maintenance as well as determining costs of repair versus replacement of equipment systems. Minor budget authority at unit level. Activities are a moderate source of potential liability to the City. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY None. EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT Infrequent contact with key city personnel, general public, government officials and attendance at public meetings. High frequency of contact with key service providers including dealerships and suppliers, etc. WORKING CONDITIONS High frequency of exposure to hazardous working conditions and moderate frequency of exposure to adverse weather conditions. Involves frequent heavy physical exertion in lifting up to 50 pounds or moving of equipment and in work requiring awkward positions using tools and equipment. May be required to work holidays, irregular hours and on call duty. This position is subject to the Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy. MECHANIC II GENERAL FUNCTIONS Maintenance and repair of City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock and small equipment. JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES 1. Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems. 2. Performs mechanical work for fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment. 4. Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property. 5. Directs work of others assigned to work with him on maintenance and repairs. 6. Builds special equipment as directed by the Head Mechanic. 7. Operates heavy equipment, trucks, etc., as required for street, sewer and water system maintenance, (occasional activity). 8. Purchases parts required for repairs. 9. Performs other duties as directed. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Five years experience in heavy mechanical work. Extensive knowledge in the repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems. Technical training equivalent to two year degree required. Welding experience required with two years experience in design and fabrication. Must have working knowledge using a metal lathe. Working knowledge required for maintenance of fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment. Ability to keep accurate records required. High school diploma or GED required. Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement required. DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES Requires the ability to assist with preventive maintenance as well as determining costs of repair versus replacement of equipment systems. Develops procedures at unit level. Moderate budget authority at unit level. Activities are a moderate source of potential liability to the City. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY Directs and organizes the work of others assigned for special projects when temporarily assigned as lead man. EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT High frequency of contact with key service personnel in the purchase of parts and supplies. Low frequency of contact with government officials, general public and key city personnel.Infrequent attendance or presentation at public meetings. WORKING CONDITIONS High frequency exposure to hazardous working situations. Moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions when working on maintenance of heavy equipment. Involves frequent heavy physical exertion in lifting or moving of equipment and in work requiring awkward positions using tools and equipment.
