SUMMARY OF POSITION The Welder is directly responsible for the overall preparation, welding, and weld finishing operations to manufacture product to drawings, specifications, or other forms of instructions. Perform combination welding including Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) MIG and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) TIG with a knowledge of chemical composition of alloy in welding rod for various types of material. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Set up, operate and maintain welding equipment; Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly and welding operations; Determine required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry and welding techniques; Read blueprints/sketches and use shop mathematics; Lay out, position and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications and using appropriate tools/devices; As needed and with assistance, preheats work piece, clamps work pieces together or assembles them in a jig or fixture, tacks assemblies together, flame-cuts metal plates or structural shapes, using flame-cutting torches or band saw; Weld in any position which includes overhead weld lines; Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies using welding equipment; Heat, form and dress metal parts using hand tools, torch or arc welding equipment; Ignite torch and adjust valves, amperage or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc; Self-inspect work performed to ensure that work meets the quality requirements and specifications; As needed, clean or degrease work piece using wire brush, portable grinder or repair broken or cracked parts, fill chips or grind off excess weld, slag or splatter; Inspect grooves, angles or gap allowances using appropriate measuring instruments; Responsible for deburring all necessary parts after fabricating operation to meet required specifications/tolerances; Remove rough spots from workpiece using portable grinder, hand file or scraper; Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts; Wear personal protective equipment; Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards; Maintain a safe work environment; Perform other related functions as may be required.
