Enhancing Life. Excelling in Care. Summary: The Registered Nurse in surgery provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the perioperative course. The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients throughout surgical intervention. The RN in surgery will supervise the Operating Room Technicians. This position will work at our Rib Mountain and new facility in Wausau on Westwood Dr. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. The primary responsibility of the RN is to perform the duties of a circulator in the Operating Room. The surgery RN also has the following responsibilities. Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout his/her surgical experience. Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff. Maintain excellent physical and mental health. Assist in patient education during all phases of the patient's experience at BJOSC. Assure that the proper supplies, instruments and equipment are available for procedures. Assure that equipment is functioning properly. Assist supervisor with preparation of budget. Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during a procedure. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/time used. Appropriately document patient care. Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with orthopedic and ASC issues. Display professionalism at work and in the community; abide by Bone and Joint service standards and STUDER principles. Take an active role on committees within the organization. Identify actual and potential risk to patient and others. Take action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety in the facility. Use Bone and Joint S.C., protocol to report actual risks and near miss scenarios. Prepare for cases by gathering supplies, instruments and equipment. Wipe flat surfaces in OR the morning of surgery. Introduce yourself to the patient and family in the pre-op holding area, utilizing AIDET skills. Assess the patient at that time, including verification and documentation of procedure to be performed, correct operative site, allergies and other pertinent patient information. Explain the role of the circulating nurse to the patient and assure the patient that a nurse will remain with them while they are in the operating room. Assist anesthesia in ensuring they have the proper supplies and drugs. Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room. Correctly position the patient for the procedure using proper positioning techniques. Assist Anesthesia personnel with induction as necessary. Moderate Sedation competency will be completed upon hire, every 2 years thereafter, remain knowledgeable in the administration of moderate sedation agents and the management/monitoring of the patient until hand-off in PACU. Assist with intra-operative imaging. Monitor for breaks in aseptic technique. Perform surgical prep per protocol. Perform sponge and needle counts as appropriate. Monitor the patient undergoing local only anesthesia according to the policy and procedures. Remain prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call system and location of emergency supplies and equipment. Assist entire team throughout procedure to ensure a desired outcome. Label and send specimens to pathology according to protocol. Ensure that Standard Precautions are maintained. At the end of the procedure, assist with securing the dressing, moving the patient to the gurney and assisting anesthesia as needed. Assist in transporting patient to PACU. Give a thorough report to the PACU RN to assure continuity of care. Be available to PACU RN for assistance as necessary. Complete the nursing record and post charges for the procedure before returning to the operating room. Assist in cleaning of OR and instruments. Assist in restocking OR and wrapping and sterilizing instruments. Organize supplies and equipment for surgical procedures according to physician preference cards. Keep Supervisor apprised of any equipment/instruments that are in need of repair or replacement. Assist with C-Arm (Must have had appropriate training Perform other duties as assigned. Education/Experience: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing with a current nursing license in the state of Wisconsin. Must have current BLS and ACLS certification; PALs desired. Two years of operating room experience is desired. Must have basic computer skills, previous experience with electronic medical record is desired. Qualifications: Preferred accomplishments include experience in Orthopedics and outpatient surgery. Must be able to communicate effectively and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff. Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center. Must have an understanding for operating, and troubleshooting machines and equipment. Valid WI Driver's license and occasional travel is required to other Bone & Joint facilities. Must be flexible in job duties and work schedule. Physical guidelines include ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers, assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating table. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Infection Control Category: This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. This means there are task that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.
