POSITION OVERVIEW: This position is primarily responsible for the execution of complex and difficult engineering projects, studies and investigation from conception through all intervening stages to completion in a specialized field of engineering.Direction provided to the Senior Project Engineer will be essentially administrative with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. The incumbent's project responsibilities will be an integral part of the department's Strategic and Operating Plan which the incumbent has helped to develop. A continued focus toward professional growth is essential. The incumbent will be responsible for project development including the development of specified time frames and budgets to meet customer satisfaction. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops major projects from conception, designs, supervises making of drawings and/or creates own drawings and bills of materials. Writes specifications, selects equipment and materials of construction, solicits vendor and contractor bids. Plans, organizes, schedules and coordinates construction and installation. Responsible for cost control, progress reporting, operator training and start-up assistance for assigned capital projects. Ensures that construction and installation of facilities and equipment is accomplished in conformance with specifications and drawings. Inspects and accepts or rejects new installations. Provides leadership for major projects which require the assistance of other engineers, plant personnel, and other departments. As such, assumes overall project responsibility including the work of other engineers as well as construction management. Evaluates, estimates cost and recommends approval or rejection of assigned projects which have been proposed for inclusion in the annual capital expenditure program for all operating plants and for the portion of the administrative capital program involving engineering expertise. When appropriate, proposes alternate constructions, installations, equipment, processes or methods which will accomplish objectives at less cost or otherwise better serve the Corporate needs. Writes original proposals for inclusion in the capital budget based on own work experience, ideas, or tests. Conducts assigned engineering studies and investigations in particular field(s) of specialization, including field tests, preparation of preliminary plans and layouts, feasibility and benefits analyses, cost estimates, and recommends approval or rejection based on these results. Keeps abreast of current developments in the food and plant engineering field and investigates, evaluates, and recommends the use or trial of new equipment. Provides engineering input on new products or processes, generally through the business response system. Includes investigation of new processes and equipment, applicability of existing and/or new equipment to new product or process, and any other related capital needs, such as buildings or services. Input includes estimates of total capital cost and timing for implementation. Provides engineering consulting services, as assigned, to other divisions/departments of the Company as required for attainment of their objectives. In particular such services are provided to R&D/QA and plants' management in the development and practical application of improvements in product quality, plant sanitation, new products and processes, manufacturing, cost improvements, and implement testing and research. Reacts to change productively and handles other related duties as needed. Demonstrates a high level of technical and professional competence and ability necessary to effectively develop and achieve project goals and lead teams in delivering toward strategic goals. Developing technical skills : Applies sound engineering principles and problem solving techniques in the analysis of project goals and action plans (i.e. design, specifications, etc.). Broadens understanding of food plant designs, GMP's, food regulations and implications for project development. Broadens knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes and procedures as they apply to project development or basic engineering principles as appropriate. Demonstrates awareness/practice of safety procedures and implications for project development. Developing functional/business skills : Monitors industry trends and develops applications to organization. Provides team leadership within overall technology organization. Develops, network within related business organization to accomplish results. Cooperates with, persuades, and achieves results in contact with peers, customers, and vendors. SCOPE : Annual capital budget responsibility varies from year to year depending on the complexion of the approved business plan. Annual capital project budget responsibility range: $2-8MM. MINIMUM OUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate B.S. Engineering degree, M.S. degree and P.E. preferred. Seven to ten years experience or equivalent combination of experience, knowledge and education. Demonstrated skills in analysis, judgment and communications, interpersonal and leadership. Demonstrated technical competence and initiative. Desire to develop engineering/business skills. Ability to manage multiple major projects concurrently.
