Thompson Engineering is looking for an experienced Designer to join our team. The best fit would be someone with comprehensive experience and knowledge of design processes and routinely works directly with a Project Engineer. This person would act in a lead capacity in the generation and preparation of designs, drawings and specifications, as well as other duties assigned by the Project Engineer. Our designers must represent the Company with quality and timely deliverables in concert with knowledge and understanding of the project objectives. Occasional remote work may be possible with approval from the supervisor. Education and training opportunities are available. Essential Functions of the Position Capable of adhering to existing CAD standards and utilizing them properly. Provide input for the resolution of engineering queries from clients or third parties. Ability to manage CAD Techs and assign work based on project needs. Skilled in the operation of one or more design software including, but not limited to, MicroStation, InRoads/Open Roads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Storm CAD, and others when applicable. Working knowledge of the engineering principles related to the discipline of work assigned. Working knowledge of construction specifications and plans and applicable regulations relating to work performed. Basic of applicable laws, regulations, codes, and policies governing discipline of expertise. Able to effectively work both independently and as a part of a larger team, on multiple, short-duration assignments or on single, large, multi-discipline projects. Able to manage the pressures associated with fast-paced environments, critical design tolerances and tight schedules. Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of modern construction. Experienced in inserting raw survey data into new and existing drawings. Able to adapt his/her schedule to meet needs as they arise (i.e., able to come in early to prepare for a meeting or stay late to respond to a client's last-minute request). Following company policies and procedures regarding safety and quality. Other Responsibilities May provide technical assistance and guidance on work methods and procedures to less experienced Designers engaged in related work. May review the work of less experienced CAD Techs and Designers involved in the preparation of preliminary and final plans and documents. May work as liaison between Project Manager and Client in coordinating detail requirements in preparation of Contract documents. Other duties as required Minimum Requirements Associates Degree in CAD/Drafting or equivalent preferred, and 10+ years of experience in civil site design focused on commercial and municipal projects. Must have practicable and verifiable experience with Microstation/AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Must show project related experience with site, grading, drainage, and utility design.Must show project related experience with site, grading, drainage, and utility design. Must be willing to work in either the Mobile or Daphne, Alabama offices as the need dictates. Must be capable of working with minimal oversight and direction from the supervisor. Experience in the use of AutoTurn preferred. Capable of adhering to existing CAD/Quality standards and utilizing them properly. The ability to make complex mathematical computations accurately. The ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Physical Requirements Must be willing to work overtime as needed by the department needs. We estimate 40 hours per week with some overtime expected. Must be able to operate a computer and sit for long periods of time. Ability to work in the field or outside, able to bend, stoop and climb.
