Historical Inventory and Archival Intern

Location:
Charlottesville, VA
Description:

About the Thomas Jefferson Foundation The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas, and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site and a Site of Conscience. Historical Inventory and Archival Intern (paid, part-time) The International Center for Jefferson (ICJS) studies is a warm, collegial, and collaborative place. The ICJS values both sociability as well as sincere inquiry into the world of Jefferson, defined broadly. As we are an interdisciplinary center for research, the staff and visiting fellows have a wide range of interests and areas of expertise - this creates stimulating conversation and opportunities to assist interns not only in assigned tasks but also as they think about their schoolwork, career goals, and life. The Historical Inventory and Archival Intern would have one overarching project as well as, at various times, other smaller tasks as assigned. The overarching project would be this: The ICJS' office is in Kenwood house, a lovely farmhouse built in the 1930s/40s that was a private residence up through the 1960s. The space is owned by the University of Virginia and is full of a mix of items, some of which are true treasures of material culture, dating from when Major General Edwin Watson lived in the home and hosted Franklin Roosevelt regularly all the way until today. There are papers in this house that have historical value as being part of the Watson collection, there are also papers in this house that have value for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation as an institution. The intern would be responsible for sorting through the house, inventorying the important items, sorting out the various papers into their respective archives, and potentially packing up for storage items that are no longer necessary to the running of Kenwood House as an office space. This work will require both physical as well as mental labors and would include some training on archiving as well as inventory and appropriate packing. Internship length is 12 weeks, 20-25 hrs/wk, and typically May 22nd - August 11th (willing to adjust start date as needed to accommodate final exams and graduation). At the end of this internship the intern will have gained the following: An understanding of how libraries and archives work including experience in shelving books, finding books, and processing items for archiving Experience making historical inventories, including identify objects, describing them and their conditions Some experience in handling, cleaning, and packing historical objects for storage First-hand knowledge of how an interdisciplinary research center and non-profit works (experience at TJF) What's new in the field of Early American History and Jefferson studies as well as knowledge about Franklin D. Roosevelt, Edwin Watson the 1930s and 1940s, plus midcentury material culture, some architectural history as well. Please provide a resume and contact information for two professional references).
