Idaho Conservation Corps - AmeriCorps 680 Hour Individual Placement U.S. Forest Service Boise National Forest Emmett and Idaho City Ranger District, ID Position Title: Timber Sale Preparation AmeriCorps Member - 680 HR Position Summary: The Boise National Forest, Emmett and Idaho City Ranger District is recruiting four 680 Hour Timber Sale Preparation AmeriCorps Members beginning May through September 2023 (dates can be flexible depending on selectee's schedule) with additional weeks available by mutual agreement. Working in Timber Sale Preparation requires knowledge of timber sale layout, harvest systems, equipment capability, and implementing silvicultural prescriptions to meet forest health or fuels reduction goals. A Member in this position will be given an opportunity to work in a variety of aspects of timber sale preparation including sale layout, marking, and cruising timber, and active sale administration. Mentorship and training in these tasks will be provided throughout the season to the candidate selected. Duties and Responsibilities: This position will be focused on the Boise National Forest timber program with duties involving sale preparation. Work is typically conducted in a crew of 3-5 people led by a crew leader and assistant crew leader. Specific duties include: Layout and GPS of timber sale units, including buffering environmentally sensitive areas such as riparian areas, wildlife areas, or archeological sites (20%) Painting exterior boundaries of timber sale units (20%) Interior marking of timber to meet silvicultural prescriptions (20%) Assisting with cruising of timber to determine sale value (20%) Training in assigned duties and cross-training with other disciplines dependent on selectee's interests (20%) Required Qualifications: Willingness to work as part of a small team Good written and verbal communication skills A positive attitude Current driver's license Ability to lift and carry 50lbs Ability and interest to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground Ability to walk on uneven terrain for up to 8 hours per day in all weather conditions Ability to hike 5-10 miles in a day in rugged country Desired Qualifications: Attention to detail. Physically fit for long days of hard work Experience with hand tools and basic carpentry Coursework in forestry is desired, especially working toward a forestry degree Working familiarity with tree and plant identification in the Rocky Mountains Basic GIS/GPS skills Duty/Housing Location: Duties are performed within either the North Zone of the Boise National Forest (Emmett, Cascade, and Lowman Ranger Districts), or the South Zone of the Boise National Forest (Idaho City and Mountain Home Ranger Districts), but there may be a few tasks across the Forest. Housing will be provided by the Boise National Forest and will most likely consist of living in a government bunkhouse on a remote Forest Service work center. Transportation will be provided in the form of either a government-owned vehicle to be used by the selectee and/or riding in a shared government-owned vehicle with a crew. Terms of Employment : Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 8th through September 2023. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. Rest breaks are included as compensated time in the basic workday. Typical work schedule is Mon-Thu, working 10 hours per day, including travel time to the Forest work site. All federally observed holidays are non-workdays. Program Benefits : $10,880 living allowance, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis $2474.27 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
