Science News , the award-winning print and digital magazine published by the Society for Science, is seeking an exceptionally talented, energetic design director to oversee the visual direction of the Science News brand in print, digital and social media. The ideal candidate will be both a strong manager and designer, overseeing the department while also designing covers and directing art and photographic content for all Science News products, including the sciencenews.org website, which drew 30.5 million pageviews in 2022 and continues to grow. This position reports directly to the Editor in Chief of Science News Media Group. You'll be joining a group of creative, inquisitive people who come to science journalism from a diversity of backgrounds, education and experiences, and who are passionate about our work as independent nonprofit journalists. Core Responsibilities Direct all phases of creative work from concept through production, including user experience and visual design, for the ScienceNews.org website and 22 print issues of Science News Develop visual strategy for Science News Media Group in collaboration with SNMG staff, the SNMG publisher, and the Society's Chief Design Officer to extend the brands of Science News and Science News Explores across platforms. Meet tight news deadlines and ensure smooth workflow for digital and print. Oversee the work of two talented in-house art directors. Manage the design and production budget in alignment with departmental goals. Work closely with editors to plan the visual approach of major stories, special issues and covers. Cultivate and nurture a roster of freelance illustrators, photographers, and other contributors. Collaborate with the digital team, reporters and editors in developing visually-driven science content for social platforms; Provide constructive feedback while continuing to inspire creative thought and guide staff development. Oversee and maintain relationship with print vendor. Other duties as needed to help drive our organization's vision, mission, and continued growth. The ideal candidate will have: An outstanding eye for visual narrative and the demonstrated ability to convey complex concepts in print and digital. Strong attention to detail, good judgment, and editorial voice. The ability to clearly communicate a vision and guide it to fruition when working with freelance contributors. Proven people management and organizational skills; ability to delegate, direct and coordinate work and collaborate across departments to meet deadlines. Fresh ideas on how to experiment with novel formats, new artists, and established contributors to create meaningful work. A collaborative mindset, stellar communication skills and the ability to work on several projects at once in a deadline-driven environment. A commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism, including ethics, fairness, and accuracy. Investment in improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in media. Ambition to help take our approach to design and ability to communicate visually to new levels. Education and Experience 7+ years of design experience in digital and print magazine publishing and 2+ years of management experience. Experience in visual journalism is a plus. Bachelor's degree with a preferred major in graphic design, or equivalent experience. Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Working knowledge of CSS; experience with HTML, DPS, Figma, Sketch and video editing is a plus. Expertise in copyright permissions and managing licensing rights. A background in science is not required, but intellectual curiosity about science and comfort with scientific ideas is essential. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works in an office setting. Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. Due to the pandemic, the Society is operating on a hybrid work model until August 31, 2023. Position Type and Expected Hours This is a full-time, exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Additional Information Society for Science has mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for employees coming into the office and attending Society events.
