COMMUNICATIONS CALL TAKER CITY OF ASTORIA, OREGON SUMMARY The Communications Call Taker position is responsible to prioritize and respond to calls for service from the public and subscriber agencies (Police, Fire & Public Works) based on established policy and protocol. Call Takers answer non-emergency phone lines to refer callers to appropriate services within the City and/or County, provide public service information, answer general questions or direct to a certified Communications Operator to dispatch calls to field units using a two-way radio system depending on the circumstances. Call Takers work extensively on computers to maintain logs and records in a busy dispatch center serving a wide geographic area, retrieve and store information and to perform other work as required. Astoria Dispatch operates within the Astoria Police Department and answers roughly 80,000 calls a year, of which approximately 13,000 are 9-1-1. From these calls Astoria Dispatch creates approximately 45,000 calls for service for police, fire and public works agencies in the Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system. SCHEDULE This position is offered for either part-time (Up to 29 hours per week) or full-time (40 hours per week with opportunities for overtime). Call Takers work in a dispatch center which operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Schedules rotate through a variety of shifts and includes work on days, swing shift, nights, holidays and weekends with proper notice. The Communications Call Taker position is a temporary assignment (up to 6 months), however, Call Takers are eligible to be considered for promotion to Communications Operator which is regular position and not a temporary assignment. KEY QUALITIES Excellent communication skills in English to listen, speak and direct during operation of multiple phone lines within the dispatch center. Advanced technological skills to accurately and efficiently use computers, software, radios and other equipment in managing calls and entering data. Well established decision making and multitasking skills. Ability to stay composed, communicate and perform effectively in emergency and high stress situations. Ability to memorize and recall details, geography, policies and procedures. Attention to detail is essential. Ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
