Adopt Shep (Neutered) a Black - with Brown, Red, Golden, Orange or Chestnut

Location:
Marietta, OH
Description:

Shep is a handsome one-year old male Shepherd/Hound mix who was brought to the HSOV late in the afternoon on December 22, 2022 by a Good Samaritan who found him on Braun Road in the Belpre Ohio area. He had reportedly been seen in that neighborhood for several days but didn't agree to be 'rescued' until that day (perhaps he sensed that frigid weather was on the way and needed to be safely indoors?). Shep was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Shep has a black-and-brown short smooth coat with a small patch of white on his chest, white toes, a long tail, and a beautiful face with dark brown eyes, a slender muzzle, and large floppy ears. This good-looking boy was naturally a bit nervous when we took his first photos on December 22nd after being on the run for awhile and then finding himself in an unfamiliar place with folks that he did not know. Shep put up a brave front in an attempt to display a macho image when (according to the Good Samaritan who found him) he actually had a very timid disposition. And she reported that Shep was very food motivated. Shep weighed 45.8 lbs when he entered our shelter. Since Shep was not reclaimed, we had him neutered on January 21, 2023. He was also given rabies vaccine that day. These updated photos of Shep were taken on the evening of March 15, 2023 when our HSOV Kennel Manager Rachal Merrow accompanied him outdoors for some out-of-kennel time and extra TLC during his photo session. Shep especially enjoyed the attention that Rachal bestowed upon him when she sat down in the green grass and held Shep in her lap. Shep can be a little intimidating in his kennel (which is not that unusual with shelter dogs who are anxious to be taken outdoors for walks and extra attention), so please don't judge Shep based upon his enthusiastic behavior when you first meet him in our Main Kennel area. Once outdoors, Shep is a different boy and settles down when he's had a little exercise. Shep is listed as a Level-2 on his dog score assessment which indicates that he does well in playgroups with other dogs most of the time. As always, if you have another dog in your home, we suggest a supervised visit with proper introductions and a meet-and-greet to make the dogs are compatible. We aren't sure how Shep feels about children or cats.
