Unknown 19th Century or Earlier Oil On Canvas of "Roman Soldier". 27" high x 291/8" wide. Plain weave canvas tacked to a 4-member, wooden stretcher(original). Tacking edges and front surface of the canvas along the tacking edges have actually been removed with holes and laced with thin red strips of material before painting. The painting has and has a dark background been skillfully returned by a Conservator from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is an original oil. This painting is part of my family estate however the history behind the original owner is a mystery and I think it most likely was an aristocrat of European origin. This painting could have initially been in the Stolpen Castle in Germany (Saxony) and came over to the United States with the Cosel Family finding to New York in 1868. The Cosel's were Aristocrats in the German Saxon location. A descendant from the Cosel family was a rich furnishings producer around 1900. Accepting offers.
