Kelsey is our pretty, yet passive Great Dane mix girl that came to Critter Cavalry Rescue under some most unusual circumstances. She is a 10 month old Lab mix girl with pretty white with black spots and a nice square face that has eyes that look to her human mom for reassurance and encouragement to do things in life. She came to Critter Cavalry Rescue with her littermates and her mom and dad all living in one car that was driven by their homeless female owner. This woman came to Nashville and promptly her car broke down just outside the Nashville Rescue Mission for people. Living in a car was what they had done for a while. This owner/woman relinquished all 7 dogs to several rescues and Critter Cavalry took the 5 young siblings Labs who were 8-9 months at the time. This was in July when it was so unbearably hot and humid and their car had no A/C. This girl has come a long way from cowering and slinking around with no confidence, to lifting her head and showing some enjoyment and happiness in life. She is still skittish of lots of things, but less so and slowly coming out of her shell where she keeps totally to herself. She is wagging her tail now when the foster mom comes home and she is learning to play with toys. She is a 50 pound girl that will grow maybe 10 more pounds up into her adulthood. She is crate trained and loads in with just a few words telling her to go. She is housebroken, doesn’t bother anything in the house when home alone and now she is excited when her humans wake up and she is there with just the slightest tail wags. This delightful work-in-progress is exactly what rescuing a dog is all about and will be very gratifying to the family who takes her in to mold, love, reassure and teach her the best way to live a great dog’s life. Kelsey is a special 10-month-old Lab mix who has traveled through the twists and turns of life to find her forever home. From living in a car with six other furry family members, to navigating the world of home comforts, she has a story that deserves to be heard. You can see the sparks of a playful pup hidden behind her cautious eyes. But Kelsey is slowly blossoming into her own better self. The few times she forgets her past, you can catch her displaying her goofy side - laying upside down, playfully tossing toys around, or even 'stealing' an occasional harmless item (which she promptly exchanges for her favorite toys!).There's a tender, tentative joy in Kelsey when she realizes that she's in a safe space. She might wag her tail at the friendly faces she meets or approach you with an eager, wagging tail, only to take a step back before remembering she's in a loving environment. But with each passing day, those steps back become fewer, and the moments of joy become longer. Another delightful trait of Kelsey’s is her unique vocal range! From her deep, protective bark to her adorable grumbles and groans, she communicates in ways that will constantly keep you entertained. Due to her booming voice, she might do best in a setting where thin apartment walls aren't a factor. As for her interactions with fellow canine companions, she looks up to them as role models and sources of comfort. While she's still navigating the dynamics of sharing resources, her progress has been commendable. The food bowl at her foster home is always full, ensuring that she slowly understands that there's no need to guard it. She's also nearly perfected her housetraining and is cozying up to the idea of a crate, although she deeply wishes for company and is learning to be at ease when alone. Kelsey is a gem in the making, a puppy at heart who's waiting to shine her brightest. She may need a bit more patience, love, and understanding than the average dog, but she promises a journey of growth, laughter, and heartwarming moments in return.
