A RARE 19TH C CANDLESTAND ATTRIBUTED TO CABINETMAKER SAMUEL WING SANDWICH MA A RARE 19TH C CANDLESTAND ATTRIBUTED TO CABINETMAKER SAMUEL WING SANDWICH MA Click images to enlarge Description ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO I SOLD ANOTHER CANDLESTAND BY THIS SAME CABINETMAKER. BOTH STANDS CAME FROM AN EARLY CAPE COD COLLECTION. A VERY RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY FEDERAL PERIOD COUNTRY CANDLE STAND WITH A ONE BOARD COFFIN SHAPED TOP ABOVE A DELICATE SHAFT WITH A TOP RING, AN URN TURNED BOTTOM ENDING WITH A TRIPE RING TURNED BASE. THE THREE SPIDER STYLED LEGS END IN SLIGHTLY FLARED FEET.THE ENTIRE STAND IN THE MOST FANTASTIC ORIGINAL RED PAINTED SURFACE WITH TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL VARNISH AS WELL. ATTRIBUTED TO THE CABINETMAKER SAMUEL WING OF SANDWICH, MA, WORKING CIRCA 1800-1813.THIS STAND HAS ALL OF THE ATTRIBUTES OF WING, INCLUDING THE COFFIN SHAPED TOP AS WELL AS THE VASE AND TRIPLE RING TURNED SHAFT. THE TALL SPIDER LEGS ALSO HAVE THE UNUSUAL SLIGHT FLARED ASPECT ON THE END OF THE FOOT. ANOTHER CANDLESTAND WITH THE SAME IDENTICAL TOP AND RING TURNED BOTTOM SHAFT FEATURE AS WELL AS THE SLIGHTLY FLARED FOOT IS ILLUSTRATED IN THE BOOK, "HARBOR AND HOME, Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts", BY BROCK JOBE AND GARY SULLIVAN, PLATE 53. SAMUEL WING WORKED IN SANDWICH, MA, (NORTHERN SHORE OF CAPE COD) FROM 1800-1813. THIS IS A WONDERFUL COUNTRY FEDERAL CANDLESTAND IN THE ABSOLUTE BEST OLD ORIGINAL RED PAINTED SURFACE.The piece still retains most of its original hand wrought nails in the cleat.It stands 27 1/2" tall and the top is 20" by 14". Typical wear associated with the age.
