This 1969 AMC AMX is a blast to drive, with great options and the perfect combination of performance, agility, and muscle-car style. When thinking back to the late 1960s, many people seem to forget that it was actually 4 horse race between the "Big Three" (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler) along with oft-neglected American Motors Corporation, otherwise known as AMC. Of course the history of AMC dates back to the mid-1950s with the merger of Hudson and Nash and the company was routinely the 4th largest auto maker in the US. Dating back to its early history, American Motors made its name primarily producing economical people movers but by the time the late-60s rolled around AMC found itself hopping into the muscle car horserace in 1968 when it released the Javelin and later that year, the AMX. When AMC introduced the AMX to the public on February 24, 1968, at the Chicago Automobile Show (though the press caught a glimpse a week earlier at the Daytona International Speedway), its goal was to shake its sleepy reputation by launching a performance-oriented car that would compete with the vast muscle car offerings already available from its Big Three competitors. Interestingly, the debut of the AMC marked the first time since the first generation Thunderbird that an American automaker built a 2-seat steel-bodied sports car. The 1969 edition of the AMX was left mostly unchanged from the previous 68 model year although AMC revised the look of the dash to make room for a new 140 MPH speedometer and tachometer. To keep with its economy car roots, AMC touted the 69 AMX in its marketing materials for its reasonable price tag at the time with it being "the first American sports car for under $3,500 since 1957." But despite its economy car image, the AMX was also could also have been ordered with the "Go-Pack" Performance Package that came with a large V8 engine, high performance carburetor, power front disc brakes, a "Twin-Grip" Limited Slip rear differential, as well as several other performance upgrades. Powering this particular 1969 AMX is a 390 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a single 4 barrel carburetor that was said to have produced 315 horsepower from the factory. The 390 V8 is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission that is shifted using a floor mounted shifter, making this pony car an absolute blast to drive. Exhaust exits the 390 powerplant via a dual exhaust setup that gives this AMX a nice throaty sound. This 69 AMX is equipped with fantastic options! With power front disc brakes, this 1969 American Motors pony car has plenty of stopping power, especially with all that horsepower under the hood. Power steering is always a welcome addition to any 60s-era muscle car since it makes driving the car a much more enjoyable experience. The twin-traction rear differential ensures that youll keep the rubber to the pavement while driving this AMC. This AMX rides on a set of redline bias-ply tires wrapped around Mag-Style wheels further accentuating the muscle car look of the car. The exterior on this AMC AMX has been correctly refinished in Butternut Beige Metallic with black racing stripes, completing the exterior look of the car. The interior on this AMX has a nice stock look as well. The bucket seats have been reupholstered in Saddle vinyl. The padded woodgrain dash, door panels, and steering wheel all appear to be in their stock configuration and have a great look. The dash is equipped with a 140 MPH speedometer, 8,000 RPM tachometer, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and clock, along with an AM radio.
