1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Spider Veloce, Pininfarina- One of just1,091 Giulia 1600 Spider Veloces produced.- Beneficiary of ajust-completed restoration to original specs.- Accompanied by aletter from Alfa Romeo confirming its factory colors.- Retains itsoriginal numbers-matching engine.Alfa Romeo announced the Giulia in1962. The Giulietta remained in production, but it was now viewedas an economical alternative designed to appeal to a wider marketsegment. Externally, the most noticeable and distinctive element ofthe Giulia Spider over its predecessors, was the imitation airintake on the bonnet. It gave the car a touch of aggressiveness toits already classic Pininfarina coachwork. The new bonnet wasnecessitated by the greater height of the engine crankcase. TheGiulia was endowed with upgraded mechanicals, too, including analloy twin-cam 92hp 1570cc 4-cylinder engine. The Giulia retainedall the benefits of its lesser sibling, the Giulietta, albeit withgreater torque at low revs.Veloce models, first appearing in 1964,offered 112hp thanks to modifications which included two Webertwin-choke carburetors and a 9.7:1 compression ratio. The smoothshifting, all-synchro manual transmission boasts five forwardspeeds compared to the previous four, and front disc brakes werefitted to improve stopping power. The nimble-handling suspension iscomprised of front upper and lower A-arms with coil springs and alive rear axle with aluminum center section and leaf springsuspension. Top speed was quoted at 110mph. The Giulietta-Giulialine represented the mainstream of Alfa Spider production throughthe middle-1960s.Road & Track summed up the new Giulia nicely."The 1600 Veloce . . . its Weber-fed engine leaps eagerly up intothe meaty high-revolution range, and even pulls well further downthe tachometer. This extra strength, controlled by the superbfive-speed all-synchromesh transmission, makes the car much bettersuited than before to increasingly fierce U.S. trafficconditions."One of just 1,091 produced, this Giulia is thebeneficiary of a just-completed and meticulously executedrotisserie restoration. It has been restored to its originalcombination of Nero over a red leather interior with black carpetshighlighted by red bindings. A letter from Alfa Romeo confirms theoriginal color combination and that the Giulia retains its originalnumbers-matching engine.
