Kindling: - Free Kindling - bring a few buckets, totes, baskets, boxes or paper bags. - Bring gloves, too. No sandals since you must protect your toes. Species: - All local hardwood species 90% of it Hickory, Oak, Maple and Beech. - No pines, other softwoods, junkwood or infestations. - Prime stock for woodstoves, fireplaces, inserts, smokers, campfires. Experience: - Folks who have come by have asked us for ShortSplits at 12" for 'smokers,' smaller woodstoves and smaller fireplaces. LongSplits at 18" are great for 'social-distancing campfires' as well as larger fireboxes. The Splits aren't too thick. Nor too thin. Each rack has some long-lasting Rounds, but not too many. Sizes: - LongSplits ~ We measure to 18" but the range on a few may be 16"-23" - ShortSplits ~ We measure to 12" but the range on a few may be 10"-16" - Rounds ~ Some smaller diameter Rounds will hopefully be mixed in. These will last you longer than Splits so we try to get a few into every rack. Start your fire with Kindling under the Splits and only put in Rounds after awhile when the fire is going strong. Put down a few 2x4's. Stack the Rounds to one side. Stack the lighter shades of wood first. Stack the darkest shades last. Woodland Management: We practice woodland management here - sustainable coppicing, wilding and tree forming. No logging, no clear cutting, no indiscriminate cutting. One fallen; many regrown. Splitting is ongoing. Our name "Storm-Felled Hardwoods" came from Hurricane Michael in October, 2018. That wood is gone but the name is still with us. Seasoned: - Moisture Content varies by species. - Moisture Meter available. - Don't buy wood too dry since before long it will burn like a kiln-dried pine 2x4. We split 'as needed' to keep some moisture, and therefore value, in the stock. Fire Safety: "85 to 90 percent [of wildfires are] from human causes, including unattended camp and debris fires, discarded cigarettes, and arson. An average of 72,400 wildfires cleared an average of 7 million acres of U.S. land each year since 2000..." - National Geographic Cookouts: Yup, firewood for Cookouts! Nothing beats it! - Whether a large firepit from individual retaining wall blocks or a patio firepit, nothing beats a natural wood campfire with family and friends. This is an easy way to maintain social distancing. Roasting sticks can be found at Amazon or big box stores. - Food Lion's "Roger Wood Lumber Jack Sausages" are quality made. These are Hungarian flavored sausages though the company is from Savannah! To bring out the flavor they MUST be held over an open wood flame with a roasting stick. Let them split open on multiple sides. Experiment with your favorite foods whether meats or veggies. Open-flame cooking is a comforting mastery. Safety: - For campfires or cookouts keep a hose connected for safety and heed public fire-danger warnings. - LongSplits will fit into larger woodstoves, most fireplaces and campfire firepits. - ShortSplits are for smaller wood stoves, small patio firepits, smokers and for those wanting a specific burn style. - Safety First. Don't take Longs if they are too big for your fireplace, stove or firepit. Shorts cost me more than Longs but I sell them for the same price. Tarp, Trailer: If you have an SUV or car bring a tarp or sheet. If you are interested in bringing a trailer we must talk about it first. Virus: Because of the virus either I can load or you can load, but not both. I'm 73 and will fetch a facemask. Sometimes I have a helper here and he can load for you, but again, not both. If you load you need gloves, boots or sneakers - no sandals. It only takes about 5 or 10 minutes to load. Drive Slowly: Please drive slowly through this woodland - 20mph or less. A great many deer, foxes, turkeys and turtles are on the streets or hiding just off the edge of the swale. Firewood Terminology: The term 'Cord' is used as a standard unit of measure usually referring to unsplit logs 4' x 4' x 8'. Rarely is a proper Cord sold since 4' lengths are not useable. Nor splittable. Arborists think in Cords - not firewood users. We think in FaceCords that are sometimes called 'Ricks'. A FaceCord could be any length. It is generally thought that three 16" long Ricks make up a Cord since that would be 4' x 4' x 8'. A 'Cord of Ricks' is a term you may hear. Don't Cover Firewood: Rain barely penetrates dried wood. In this climate you are better off NOT covering firewood and allowing it to breathe or it will go to mold and rot. Furthermore snakes love the heat just below covered firewood. On the otherhand, if you do want the surface of your firewood very dry, or the wood you purchased is a bit green, stack it in a dryer spot. If you have a lean-to, shed or good size soffit on your house it will breathe nicely and that outer 1/8" or 1/4" will stay dry. If your wood does get too dry hosing it down heavily for a long time may help. (Note: 15 years ago we tried covering open firewood with a top cover. Not a good idea in this climate.) Hints: ... The warmer the wood the easier it is to start. Lay two pieces of splintered, rough firewood next each other and two above. Put kindling between the layers. Buy a bellows for about $15. Start the fire with kindling splinters, some bark chips or the tupe of chipboard from cereal boxes. Neither paper nor corrugated cardboard work as well. Tiny, fast repeating puffs from the bellows will enhance the flames until the rising heat crackles your flue to suck air past your enflamed wood. (Of course, the tried and true teepee method from tiny twigs to branches to logs does work perfectly, even if laboriously.) ... Fireplaces - Open flue before starting fire. Consider opening a window slightly to get it started. Close flue when ashes are 100% cold. Cleanout flue annually. ... Existing Woodstoves - See if your stove has an air inlet on back or bottom and run a pipe into your crawlspace. Screen the pipe for bugs. Cleanout flue and clean the air inlet screens annually. ... New Woodstoves - Buy one with an air inlet that can be piped into your crawlspace, or, during new construction, if on a slab, have the plumber trench in a 4" pipe for your air inlet. Screen the pipe down at the inlet. Cleanout flue and clean the air inlet screens annually. Tree Services, Arborists, Landscapers: - Will accept Oak, Hickory, Maple, Beech and Apple logs (or ask me if it's other than these). - No Sweet Gum, River Birch, Softwoods, infestations or rot.
