Features & Description

A signed, original gouache and ink painting by Tom Knitch, a well known artist and illustrator and one of the great animation background painters of the 1950s and 60s. His early work is featured in the recent book, "Cartoon Modern" by Amid Amidi.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece in brilliant oranges yellows and greens. Brightens any decor — great for mid-century modern art collectors or animation memorabilia fans. To emphasize, this is an original painting...NOT a print.

The subject of this cheerful piece is a stylized "still life" of a butterfly amid colorful poppies. Directly below, in the matte, is what appears to be a hand-written inscription which reads:

This butterfly which on a poppy clings,
Opens and shuts a booklet's paper wings.
(the signature or attribution is illegible)

Title and date of origin is unknown, but the painting style and framing suggests to us that it was probably created in the 1960s or early 1970s. Style is reminiscent of greeting card designs of the period.

Frame measures approximately 17" wide x 22" high x 1" deep. Image area is approximately 12" wide x 16" high.

Excellent vintage condition. Professional framing with protective glass (not acrylic) covering the art. Gold metal frame shows typical signs of wear, including scratches and dings, but the artwork itself appears to be in pristine condition. In raking light, you can see a very slight surface ripple on the art, but this just seems to be a characteristic of the painting and not a flaw or condition. There are signs of light liquid damage on the upper and lower mattes, but this does not seem to have reached down to the artwork. No sun damage or fading.
