Did you read the Ticked Off column in the Orlando Sentinel last month? Someone wrote that a local locksmith broke their lock and made a lot of excuses (didn’t fix it) including saying it was a door problem. When the homeowners called a contractor to fix the door, the contractor said it was a broken lock. The homeowner called the locksmith again who denied he even did the work. Okay, so this guy is in denial but I sure would have liked to know more details on the lock, especially the age.

Most locks you buy at the home improvement stores are of lower-grade metal and don’t hold up very long. It wasn’t too long ago that a major manufacturer finally quit putting plastic parts inside their locks – PLASTIC! Can you believe that??? Turn the knob on one of those babies too hard and POP! you’ve just broken the plastic ring. Only thing to do now is replace the lock.

Another lock is a knock-off of Kwikset locks. One can exert pressure on the internal parts of a Kwikset lock to unassemble, fix or rekey it, then it can be re-assembled. Not so with the knock-off. Exert pressure on that lock and the MUCH lower grade metal bends in ways that won't go back. Just try to re-assemble that lock – it can’t be done. Again it's time to buy a new lock.

Well, let’s hope this homeowner called another local locksmith to handle their situation.
