Hello, to all those interested in buying a Mastiff puppy!Please don't buy from people who don't health test their stock prior to breeding. What do I mean by Health testing? I mean that the sire and dam are OFA or PennHIP tested for Hips and OFA tested for Elbows. There is also a PRA test for potential blindness, an eye certification test, and a heart test. You should be able to see the test certificates with the scores or check them on the OFA website. When a breeder spends the money on testing, they should be more than happy to show you the results. This health testing should not be confused with shots, worming, vet check-ups and micro-chipping .....the normal puppy stuff that is part of general health care.
I also highly recommend temperament testing with a trainer evaluation of the sire and dam. Please educate yourself before buying..... no matter what breed. Beware of breeders placing pups under the age of 8 weeks, beware of breeders breeding dogs under 2 years of age, beware of breeders claiming that they are show-quality pups(ask to see show pictures of the parents), beware of non-refundable deposits, and beware of the breeders who claim that they have bred for years and never had a problem. If a breeder does not answer your questions directly, ask it again, and if they still do not answer...turn around and walk away. Try to ask your questions prior to visiting the puppies. It is so hard to resist a cute puppy! At about two-three years of age(after most health guarantees expire) these health issues will start cropping up, and an unhealthy dog is a very expensive dog.
