A timely 458 page nonfiction book with helpful tips for caregivers is sold and signed by author Fay Risner CNA. If you ever drove through Benton Co. Iowa on highway 30 between 1961 and 1987 you passed by a Standard gas station that had been a fixture there since the Lincoln Highway days. If you stopped in at that quaint station with it's saloon bar counter and wooden pop cooler, you met my parents Bill and Sylvia Bullock. Follow Bill's ten year battle with AD as chronicled in my journal. With all that AD tossed Bill's way as he and his family struggled with this disease, his wife, Sylvia, stands out for her strength, courage and determination to take care of Bill herself to the end and against all odds. This story is meant to be an awareness and education for caregivers or people who might become caregivers.
My experiences come from 15 years as a long term CNA at the Keystone Nursing Care Center, 8 years as support group facilitator and a speaker for the Alzheimer's Association since 1999 in the outreach program educating people about AD plus ten years as a famiy caregiver. I have been awarded 2004 Nurse Aide by Iowa Health Care Assoication and 2006 Professional Caregiver by the Alzheimer's Association.
