Workshop: Finger Cymbals 101 from Melissa Amira Coffman-Garcia

Finger cymbals, aka zills (Turkish) or sagat (Egyptian Arabic), were the first musical instrument I ever learned to play and one of my favorite aspects of Middle Eastern Dance. I began studying cymbals in my first beginner MED class with Roubina Abassi in 1993 and have been performing with them since 1995.

Over the years I have noticed a steady decline in dancers that use them in performance. Too many times I have been one of the only dancers performing with cymbals in a show. Iâve heard many dancers say that they would perform with their cymbals but that âthey take too long to learn to play them well.â This, to me, is a sad state of affairs as I consider finger cymbals to be an integral part of Middle Eastern Dance. In full honesty, cymbals do take practice and patience to master but doesnât any skill? That being said, I firmly believe that every dancer and/or instructor should have at leastbasic knowledge of tonal differences and simple rhythms as well as how to wear them and how to care for them. All of these will be covered in class as well as drills that you can take with you to integrate into your regular practice routine that include basic movement technique paired with basic rhythms to get you comfortable dancing with cymbals.

My goal with this workshop is to teach you techniques that will help you begin the journey to mastering the art of playing finger cymbals; not only an ancient and fascinating musical instrument but also a beautiful and historic part of the dance we love so much.
