Features & Description
Break the Cycle, a program headed by the RSVP program of the organization NORWESCAP, Inc. (www.norwescap.org) is seeking life experienced mentors to mentor children whose parents are or have been incarcerated. Break the Cycle offers the opportunity for an individual 55 years and older to make a difference in their local community through volunteer efforts. The mentoring program uses adult mentors who are willing to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young person for a period of at least one year. While there are many programs that assist those incarcerated, very little concentration is placed on the children of inmates and the directions that their lives are taking. Did you know that children of prisoners are six times more likely than other children to be incarcerated at some point in their lives? Without effective intervention strategies, as many as 70% of these children will become involved with the criminal justice system. Mentoring is a hopeful approach for responding to the challenges these children are facing.
