The University of California at Berkeley's College of Chemistry is seeking a Senior Lab Mechanician / Principal Lab Mechanician to design, fabricate, modify, maintain and repair mechanical equipment, laboratory apparatus, and components. The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of techniques used in the fabrication and design of cryogenic, ultra high vacuum, and high pressure equipment, including all types of plumbing utilized within a research laboratory setting.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Requirements for both the Senior Lab Mechanician and the Principal Lab Mechanician levels include:

• Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and 6 years of metal shop experience and journeyman skill in the operation of all standard machine shop equipment equivalent to that of an instrument maker; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience in closing tolerances (.0001") with a wide variety of exotic materials and working from blueprints, rough sketches, and verbal instructions.

• Experience in fabrication of cryogenic, ultra high vacuum, high pressure, and laboratory plumbing components and systems.

• Ability to perform all types of soldering and TIG welding processes.

• CNC skills.

• Ability to work productively in a fast paced and demanding environment.

• Effective communication skills.

• Strong analytical and organizational skills.

• Ability to collaboratively identify, analyze, and solve problems.

• Tig Welding skill preferred.

Additional requirements for the Principal Lab Mechanician level include:

• 8 years of experience in general machine shop work, tools, and die or instrument making; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

• In depth knowledge of standard mechanical and machine shop best practices.

• Design experience and skills equivalent to a R&D machinist.
