Made in 1987 of red clay, this beautiful pottery bowl stands 2 inches high by 3 inches wide. It is Signed and Dated on the bottom by the artist, and his Native American Indian nation affiliation: A. Ahk, Navajo, USA, 1987.

AHK is short for the Navajo family name "AHKEAH". The Artist is probably related to the Late, Great Navajo Leader, Sam Ahkeah.

Acoma (AHK-uh-muh) Pueblo in New Mexico, was built on 70 acres of a massive sandstone mesa, 367-feet above the valley, and approximately 7,000 feet above sea level. It was first inhabited about 700 A.D. and Archeologists agree it has been continuously occupied from at approxiamtely 1150 A.D. to the present.

Acoma Pueblo is sometimes called "Sky City" due to its height above the valley. The name "Acoma" translates to mean: "Place of Readiness".

Many of the Acoma Pueblo Indians are artists who produce the famous and highly priced Acoma Pottery. Using native white clay, they mold, etch, and paint unique white and black designs on various types of thin-walled pots.

The artisan works the clay into long rope like coils, which are built onto each other, forming the base and walls of the pottery. The pottery is dried, then fired in wood and other materials, to add the unique coloration and "clouds" on the interior walls of the pottery.
