Every business -- large and small -- is owed money. As a business owner, it should be your hope that you will be paid for your products and services, either up front or soon after the product or service is delivered. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Some of your account receivables may date back a few months or years, and some reflect payments that bounced and promises that were broken.

We are a general practice law firm that does substantial collections for our clients. This means the recovery of money already earned by you. Oftentimes, you have lost the cost of your product or service, and internally written off the profit due to the client being a deadbeat or the amount being too small. We collect all types of debts, including:

Contracts:A contract is a document in which your customer or a guarantor has signed their name, and which spells out the terms of sale. Contracts can be very simplistic, or specific and long. If you have a contract with the client, you probably have a provision that allows us to collect the principal, interest of some type (from 10 to 30 percent per annum), attorneys fees (usually about 20% to 25% of the principal), plus court costs.

Open Accounts:These accounts are those transactions where you have no contract. These accounts are when you usually just have request to purchase goods or services which you timely deliver to the customer. Open accounts generally permit us to collect the principal amount due, plus legal interest from the date of the invoice, plus court costs.

Bad Checks:A bad check is a payment tendered to you which is returned by the customers bank due to insufficient funds or a closed account. In Virginia, we can collect the face amount of the check, plus your bank costs for returning the check, plus a processing fee for you of $20.00, plus a civil penalty of up to $250.00.

Big or small, we want to collect debts owed to you. We collect any and all amounts, although our specialty has evolved into collections exceeding $15,000.00. Our fees are generally contingent upon the amounts we recover. A contingency means we only get paid if you get paid. Consequently, there is usually no downside to letting us help you. The contingency fee for our service is typically 40% of any amount recovered. If we handle a substantial number of accounts for you, we can discuss a change in this percentage. While 40% may seem substantial, it is not excessive when you consider the basic principal, add in fees awarded for legal collection, interest and costs, and further consider that anything we collect is more than you have in your pocket today.

Our attorneys and staff have been doing collections for several years in this area for vacuum, roofing, engineering, food and software companies, major department stores, doctors, collection agencies, gyms, and some of the largest law firms in Washington, D.C.
