For 37 years, the current owners of Tandle Hill Road have enjoyed the wonderful, far-reaching views from their family home overlooking Tandle Hill Country Park. "We have felt privileged that our home occupies such a fantastic position," explains the current owner. "Our property is the only one on the road built at an angle and this means that we have a rural outlook from three sides with views right down the valley." Positioned 650 feet above sea level, it was this amazing location that first attracted the current owners and over the years, they have witnessed subtle changes in the landscape. "When we first moved here in the 1970's, we could see across to Jodrell Bank in Cheshire but gradually more trees have been planted and the woods have become more dense. "We have really enjoyed the benefits of having the countryside on our doorstep especially as our children were growing up. We'd only been here a month when I was sat in the lounge and was amazed to see a cow's head suddenly appear over the top of the fence. We've had cattle in the fields every year since then." Conveniently situated between the towns of Oldham and Rochdale, each just four miles away, the detached property was built in 1934 and had been extended twice when the current owners bought it. "We loved the fact that this was such a substantial family house with potential to extend further," says the current owner. "It also had such a light and airy feel with large windows on the landing and four bay windows which make such a difference to the rooms. "During the 1950's the kitchen had been extended to 19 feet long which was a great size and the previous owners had also added a downstairs cloakroom that opens off the entrance hall. It had a single-flat roofed garage at the side which we felt offered us a lot of scope for improvement." With a growing family to accommodate, the current owners built a double garage with a large bedroom over the top with windows overlooking the fields. They also added an en-suite shower room to the master bedroom, concealed within storage cupboards. "Everything we've done to the house has been for the benefit of our family and we've adapted the space to meet our needs. We have five bedrooms now but we use the smallest room as a study. Having children, we've always put a lot of importance on storage and this is particularly evident in the bedrooms, bathroom and even under the stairs! You can't have enough of it!" The most recent project for the current owners was the redecoration of the family lounge that involved putting in a new ceiling with chandeliers and fitting a feature fireplace of polished stone. The ground floor of the house has ample space for entertaining with a spacious entrance hall accessed through double glass doors and a number of the reception rooms flowing though to each other. "One of the things we loved about the house was its ability to accommodate large groups of people comfortably," says the current owner. "We enjoy entertaining family and friends and we've had some wonderful parties and gatherings here. "The size of the kitchen makes it conducive for family meals and when we had it refitted, we included a breakfast bar for casual meals. Even washing up is a pleasure because the views from the kitchen window are uninterrupted. We are lucky being on the end of the road which has given us a greater level of privacy." For the current owners, the location of their home has contributed to their healthy outdoor lifestyle whether that involves working in the garden or walking around the country park. "It's wonderful to see the variety of wildlife around us. In the garden we're visited by owls, bats and all sorts of birds. We've even spotted kestrels and sparrowhawks. On a fine day there's nothing nicer than ambling around the country park – we'll often do a circuit which is about two miles long." With their children having grown-up and flown the nest, the current owners are now looking to downsize for a new lifestyle by the coast. "We're excited by the prospect of moving on," concludes the current owner. "We've put a lot of ourselves into the house but it will be nice to see another family enjoy the benefits of living here. "The beauty is that we have one foot in the countryside and yet the M62 is only three minutes' drive away and you can be anywhere. We really have had the best of both worlds."
