Dodge's Nitro comes in three different models for 2008-base SXT, mid-range SLT, and the sporty R/T. The SXT and SLT have a 3.7L V6 engine making 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque, while the R/T model has a 4.0L overhead-cam V6 making 260 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. With the 3.7L engine, a six-speed manual is standard with a four-speed automatic optional; a five-speed automatic is the only transmission offered with the 4.0L, though it has Electronic Range Select shift control.

Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard on the Nitro, along with ESP electronic stability control, which helps maintain stability on slippery surfaces or in abrupt maneuvers.

The Nitro has an independent coil-spring front suspension and solid five-link rear suspension, in a configuration that's capable for trailer towing. SXT models get a suspension tuned more for ride, while SLT and R/T models get a performance-tuned setup that includes a stiffer sway bar, tighter springs and shocks, and 20-inch tires.

SLT and R/T models also get chrome detailing around the instrument cluster, steering wheel, center console, and door handles, plus a different gear shift knob.

The Nitro's packaging helps get the most out of the compact dimensions, with a fold-flat front passenger seat, fold-flat second-row seats for expanding the cargo space, and, on the SLT and R/T, a Load 'N Go cargo floor that slides 18 inches rearward for easier loading and unloading of heavy items, or grocery bags. The floor system can hold up to 400 pounds. On SXT models there's a reversible cargo floor with available utility table.

Noteworthy options on the Nitro include a MyGig Multimedia Infotainment System with a navigation system that now features real-time traffic data; a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, premium audio with a subwoofer, heated leather seats, remote start, Park Sense, and the UConnect Bluetooth hands-free calling interface.
The Dodge Nitro, introduced in 2007, enters its second model year with only a few minor changes. The sporty R/T model gets new two-tone seats, with inserts in a choice of Inferno Red, Electric Blue, or Sunburst Orange. A newly available SXT C Package brings a body-color fascia, fender flares, and body side molding. Also, major options are brought together into several packages, called the Travel Group, Convenience Group, and Premium Sound Package.

Safety-wise, a new trailer sway control system is standard in addition to the electronic stability control, and a ParkSense rear park assist system is now available as an option.

While some vehicles are built with an emphasis on a plush ride, and others place performance above all else, the 2008 Dodge Nitro is essentially an exercise in bold, look-at-me styling.

The exterior of the 2008 Dodge Nitro is, if nothing else, unmistakable. Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com show overwhelming approval for the direction Dodge has taken with the Dodge Nitro. Car and Driver christens the look "slash-'n'-burn urban styling that would appear right at home in the latest Diddy music video," especially the R/T version that comes "with flashy paint that accentuates its huge fender flares." This 2008 Dodge comes in three trim levels: the base SXT, mid-level SLT, and top-of-the-line R/T model. Exterior differences between the three are noticeable, and Cars.com points out that "the nearly vertical grille is silver on SXT and SLT trims, but the crosshair portion of the grille is body-colored on R/T models," and Kelley Blue Book says that "base SXT models get dark, unpainted bumper fascias, moldings and fender flares." Regardless of which trim of the Dodge Nitro you look at, all boast a "bad-boy road presence" and "brash exterior styling," according to Edmunds. They write that "whereas most compact and midsize SUVs are defined by soft, rounded forms, the 2008 Dodge Nitro has such a square jawline and such exaggerated wheel flares you can't take your eyes off it." Even Cars.com reviewers, who claim a "normal aversion to overly aggressive-looking SUVs," admit that they are "fond of the Nitro's Tonka-tough appearance."
