2007 Volvo S60 Review

Volvo's 2007 S60 comes in three different models: the base 2.5T, sportier T5, and high-performance S60 R. 2.5T models come with a 208-horsepower, 2.5L low-pressure-turbocharged five-cylinder engine, while the T5 steps up to a 257-horsepower, 2.4L high-pressure-turbo five-cylinder. The top-performance S60 R gets a 300-horsepower, 2.5L turbo five. The 2.5T models can be equipped with an Instant Traction all-wheel drive system that delivers up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels as needed.

The 2.5T comes only with a five-speed automatic transmission, but the T5 model can be specified with either a six-speed manual or the automatic with Geartronic manual selection mode. The R comes only with a six-speed manual transmission.

As it's a Volvo, the S60 comes with a long list of safety features including the Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) system, side impact air bags, inflatable curtain side-curtain air bags, and a whiplash protection system.

At the top of the range is the high-performance S60 R, which also includes version of Volvo's all-wheel drive system tuned for rapid driving, along with a "Four-C" adaptive suspension system, bi-xenon headlamps, and more powerful Brembo brakes. Inside, the S60 R gets blue-tinted gauge faces, a 300-watt surround sound system, and special aluminum and leather trim.

Most options have been streamlined into packages for 2007. On 2.5T and T5 models, a Premium Package adds a power sunroof, leather upholstery, and real wood inlays (2.5T), while a Convenience Package includes a garage door opener, rear park assist, and a compass. A Sport Package available on the 2.5T brings Volvo's highly respected sport seats, the Geartronic automatic transmission, upgraded "Tuscana" 17-inch alloy wheels, and a surround sound system with six-disc changer. A Climate Package includes heated front seats, rainsensor wipers, and a headlight wiper/washer system.

Optional on all models is a new active bi-xenon headlamp system that processes and optimizes the beam pattern and can angle the beam up to 15 degrees in either direction. Flashier 18-inch "Eudora" alloy wheels add to the T5's look, and the Four-C system is also available on the T5. A DVD-based navigation system is available on all models
The Volvo S60 gets a number of minor changes to both its appearance and equipment list for 2007. On the outside, the S60 gets a new grille and front bumper, and the available front spoiler has been redesigned for a sleeker look. A rear wing spoiler is now optional, and lower-body cladding has been body-color coordinated. Side mirrors have been redesigned with integrated turn signals. Inside, the T5 model gets a new watch-dial-inspired gauge cluster such as that used in the S60 R, and the upholstery has been revamped.

The options list has been revised and simplified into packages. A surround sound system with six-disc changer is now included in the Sport Package, and active bi-xenon headlamps are now a standalone option. A new color, Passion Red, replaces Ruby Red in the lineup, while Solid Black is deleted. Puddle lights are also no longer offered.

The S60's suspension has been retuned, with a firmer overall setting for improved handling. All models are now equipped with the dynamic stability traction control (DSTC) system. see less
