2007 Toyota Matrix Review

Toyota's Corolla-based 2007 Matrix hatchback combines the versatile layout of an SUV with the frugality of a small passenger car. Two trim levels remain-Standard and XR-and both are powered by a 126-horsepower, 1.8L DOHC four-cylinder engine. The engine has variable valve timing for improved low-rev response, and is especially fuel-efficient, bringing EPA ratings of 30 city, 36 highway with the standard five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is available.

The Matrix's interior layout helps get the most out of its available space. If folding the back seats forward doesn't yield enough space, the front passenger seat also folds forward, and flat. Also, the hatchback's glass can be opened separately for convenient loading of smaller items.

Standard trim models are equipped with air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver's seat, and a four-speaker CD sound system. XR models include significantly more equipment, including keyless entry, variable intermittent wipers, a rear-window wiper, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. Key options on the XR include a moonroof and large 17-inch alloys.

Anti-lock brakes with brake assist are optional, and vehicle stability control, which helps maintain control during abrupt maneuvers or on slippery surfaces, is optional on Matrix models equipped with automatic transmission.

As the performance-oriented XRS model has now been discontinued, a sporty new M-Theory package is now available at a $1,500 premium on the XR. It includes unique Speedway Blue paint, a matching rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tip, 17-inch Caldina wheels, and special badges, while performance will be improved with four-wheel disc brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, and a front strut-tower brace. The M-Theory will only be offered in a limited edition of 2,500 units.
Toyota trimmed the Matrix lineup for 2007. All-wheel drive is no longer available, and the performance-oriented Matrix XRS has been discontinued altogether. A new M-Theory special edition sport package includes a sport-tuned suspension and a number of appearance enhancements. see less
