The 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara uses a 2.7L V6 engine with four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts. It makes 185 horsepower and 184 ft-lbs of torque and achieves a respectable 19 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway with two wheel drive, according to the EPA. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base Grand Vitara, while a smooth-shifting five-speed automatic is optional on the base model and standard on all other trims.
The base Grand Vitara has electronic stability and traction controls, anti-lock brakes, power mirrors, a tire pressure monitor, cruise control, automatic climate control, a CD player with MP3 capability, seat-mounted air bags, side curtain air bags, and power windows and locks with remote keyless entry.
The Xsport trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, a hard shell spare tire cover, front fog lamps, privacy glass, SmartPass keyless entry and starting, and a six-CD changer. The Luxury trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, HomeLink, interior woodgrain accents, and heated mirrors and front leather seats.
All of the trims are available with either two- or four-wheel drive, and Suzuki has simplified the controls for readying Grand Vitara to claw its way up that muddy fire road. A convenient knob is located on the dash just below the three-dial heater controls. Rotate the knob one click and the center differential locks. One more turn and the Grand Vitara also engages its low-range. The final position is for flat towing, and puts the drivetrain in neutral.
The cabin is exceptionally well finished, and the exterior styling is quite pleasant. There are 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, and that expands to a hefty 68.9 when they are folded down.
Suzuki's Grand Vitara was redesigned in 2006, and it enters 2007 with virtually no changes.
