Mercedes-Benz freshened its E Class for 2007. The front end gets a more aggressive bumper and lower fascia, and the grille is mildly restyled. Careful study will also note subtle changes to the taillights, rear bumper, and side view mirrors. Inside there is a revised steering wheel and shifter. While all these improvements are fine, it's what under the hood that has undergone the more dramatic changes.

In 2006, the E320 was replaced by the 268-horespower E350 V6 model, which continues on in 2007. The E500 gets shouldered aside this year, though for the 382-horsepower V8 E550. Sitting at the top of the range is the E63 AMG. This muscle car carries a normally aspirated V8, built by AMG, and makes an eye-popping 507-horsepower and 465 ft-lbs of torque. Mercedes' elegant and capable mid-size sedan and wagon is refreshed for 2007 with exterior styling changes that include a new front bumper and lower air dam, revised grille, headlights, and tail-lights. All '07 models are equipped with a standard sunroof and upgraded Harmon Kardon stereo with six-disc CD-changer -- as well as a PRE SAFE collision-anticipation system that prepares the car's safety systems when an imminent crash is anticipated. Model designations are shifted for 2007 as well. The E500 is replaced by a new E550, with a standard 382 hp V-8 vs. the 302 hp V-8 in last year's E500. An updated AMG version of the E-Class is on deck for later in the model year, as well as a new diesel E-Class. A Sport package is available that adds specific 18-inch wheels, lowered sport-tuned suspension, dual chrome exhaust tips, and Birdseye maple trim for the interior. Standard safety items include four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Brake Assist, side-impact and head-curtain airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Automatic Slip Control, and active head restraints to help reduce whiplash injuries. Optional amenities include a navigation system, adaptive cruise control, heated seats and steering wheel, and a power trunk closer. 2007 models all get an iPod operating interface that integrates the portable MP3 player with the car's audio system.
