Large enough to nearly qualify as full-size, the 2007 Ford Five Hundred straddles the line between mid and full size passenger car classes.

The sole engine option is the venerable Duratec 3.0L V6. It is available on the front-wheel drive version with a six-speed automatic, or on the all-wheel-drive models with a continuously variable transmission. The all-wheel-drive system provides improved traction and handling security, while the CVT provides better acceleration than the conventional automatic.

The Five Hundred may not be the flashiest model in Ford's lineup, but that's exactly where Ford meant to be. Intended to appeal to customers who used to buy the Taurus, the Five Hundred was designed with clean lines and generous interior capacity. The engine is rated at 203 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, and it delivers reasonable fuel economy, especially within its class.

The base SEL Five Hundred carries an impressive list of standard equipment including 17-inch aluminum wheels, six-way power front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power locks and windows, remote keyless entry, and anti-lock brakes.

The Interior Convenience Package includes popular add-ons such as fog lamps, six-disc CD changer, and dual-zone climate control. The Interior Power Package upgrades the driver seat, as well as adding power-adjustable pedals. Satellite radio is optional, as is a power moonroof and DVD entertainment system for $895. Navigation is optional for $1,995.

The Limited Five Hundred improves upon the SEL's standard equipment with 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated leather power seats, an upgraded stereo with six-disc CD changer and a subwoofer. The Limited Convenience Package includes adjustable pedals, a universal garage door opener, and a reverse sensing system for $475.
Ford's flagship Five Hundred, which was introduced in 2005, changed very little for 2007. The SE trim has been dropped from the lineup, leaving the SEL as the base trim. This year, side-impact air bags and Ford's Safety Canopy system are now standard. Prices have been reduced by $1,200 on the SEL trim and $230 on the Limited trim. see less

For 2007, the Five Hundred sedan is offered in SEL and Limited trim lines only; the SE version has been dropped. Side-impact airbags and curtain airbags are now standard equipment on all models. Front-drive versions get a standard six-speed automatic transmission and Sirius satellite radio is now available, as is a new Chrome Package featuring eight-spoke, 18-inch chrome wheels and a chrome mesh grille. New colors for 2007 include Alloy Clearcoat Metallic and Dune Pearl Clearcoat Metallic. This large sedan shares platforms with the Ford Freestyle and Volvo XC90 and the Mercury Montego sedan. It comes with a well-designed interior that offers generous passenger room in both the front and rear, with upright seating and a 21 cubic foot trunk. All-wheel drive remains on the menu and the standard engine is a 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 200 horsepower. AWD-equipped models get a continuously variable transmission and self-leveling shocks that sense ride height and use energy from the vehicle's motion to raise the shocks to the optimal ride level. Standard equipment on the SEL includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel with audio controls, message center with electronic compass, tilt steering wheel with speed control, and a SecuriLock passive anti-theft system. Top-of-the-line Limiteds come with 18-inch wheels, heated chrome exterior mirrors with puddle lamps, an Audiophile audio system with six-CD changer and subwoofer, heated driver and passenger seats with leather seating surfaces. A rear-seat DVD entertainment system is available, as is DVD navigation.
