Touareg

Volkswagen's full-size sport-utility vehicle shares platforms and certain components with the Porsche Cayenne, and is named after a tribe of nomads living in theSahara Desert . For 2005, its base 3.2-liter V-6 engine has been upgraded to produce 240 horsepower, which us up from 220 last year. An available 4.2-liter V-8 continues to generate a hearty 310 horses, while a 5.0-liter V-10 turbodiesel powerplant provides better fuel economy at the same horsepower rating, along with added low-end power for towing purposes. Front-side and side-curtain airbags, VW's Electronic Stability Program, and an extensive list of comfort and convenience features are included across the line. While the Touareg is able to tackle some of the roughest off-road adventures, it behaves in a more car-like manner than do many truck-based SUVs, and a rear air suspension is available to further soften the ride. Servotronic power steering, a self-dimming exterior mirror and full-size rear-mounted spare tire are added for 2005, and a tire-pressure monitor, satellite radio unit, VW telematics system, and revised 18-inch wheels are newly optional, with a DVD navigation system becoming available later in the model year.
