Review:
Mountaineer
Newly standard for
2005 on Mercury's version of the Ford Explorer is AdvanceTrac stability
enhancement system with Roll Stability Control that's able to selectively engage
the anti-lock braking system and engine controls to help prevent the vehicle
from rolling over under extreme handling situations. New this year is a Designer
Series package that includes "Preferred Suede" interior trim, with specific
scuff plates and 17-inch chrome wheels. Available with either rear- or
all-wheel-drive, the midsize Mountaineer comes standard with a 210-horsepower
4.0-liter V-6, and alternately offers an aluminum-block 239-horsepower 4.6-liter
V-8. A five-speed automatic is standard in all models, as are four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes and a tire
pressure monitoring system. A Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag system is
standard on the Premier version, optional on all other trim
levels.
